2016 Subaru Crosstrek Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 7.6

Most reviewers say the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek has an impressively lined interior with soft, quality materials. They note that the infotainment system is user-friendly and that controls are placed within the driver’s reach on the center stack. Critics think the seats are roomy in both rows, but cargo space is small for the class.

  • "The dashboard and door panels are wrapped in soft-touch trim, and in general the Crosstrek's cabin materials are nicer than Subaru's historical norm." -- Edmunds
  • "With plenty of soft-touch materials and a simple, cohesive overall design, the Crosstrek's cabin is a pleasant place to ride out long journeys." -- Left Lane News
  • "We also like the … tastefully finished cabin." -- Consumer Guide (2015)
  • "The cabin is not luxurious by any stretch of the imagination, but nor would you expect it to be. It is functional and cost-effective, with options -- such as the moonroof and nav -- which line it up nicely with other cars in the compact crossover division." -- Jalopnik (2013)

Seating

The Subaru Crosstrek seats five and comes standard with cloth upholstery. Available features include leather upholstery and heated front seats.

Auto journalists report that the Crosstrek has spacious seating in the front and rear, adding that a 6-footer can sit behind another 6-footer without compromising anyone’s head- or legroom.

  • "For drivers and passengers alike, the Crosstrek has plenty of room, even with 6-footers in the mix." -- Edmunds
  • Otherwise it's mostly the same, with rear seats that are sufficiently big for adults, but may be better used when folded flat for nearly 52 cubic feet of cargo space." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Rear-seat space is better than normal for compact cars and even outshines some larger sport utes. A six-footer can sit behind another, with enough foot space, legroom, and headroom to be comfortable. Wide rear doors help ease entry and exit." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "For such a relatively small vehicle, the Crosstrek has a surprising amount of room inside. I could easily sit behind myself with plenty of headroom. Being 6'2", that's not something I can say about every vehicle." -- Motor Trend (2013)

Interior Features

The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek comes standard with a four speaker audio system, a rearview camera and Subaru's Starlink infotainment system with a 6.2-inch touch-screen display, Bluetooth, HD Radio, smartphone app integration and a USB port. The Crosstrek is available with an upgraded Starlink system (with a 7-inch touch screen), voice-activated navigation, push-button start, hands-free text messaging, two USB ports, automatic climate control, satellite radio, a moonroof, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and Subaru’s EyeSight system, which comes with adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking and lane departure warning.

Reviewers say the Crosstrek is near the top of the class in regard to interior tech features. They note the infotainment system is easy to use and that audio and climate controls are well-positioned on the center stack. However, they add that the audio system’s sound quality is poor and that there are no available audio-system upgrades, which many competitors offer.

  • With a standard 6.2-inch touchscreen interface and an available 7.0-inch touchscreen that includes enhanced multimedia features, the Crosstrek has one of the better-equipped interiors in this segment from a technological standpoint. Standard audio quality is pretty awful, though, and there's no premium brand-name upgrade as you'll find in some rivals." -- Edmunds
  • "The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek SUV features the newest Starlink infotainment system that emphasizes apps and user-friendliness, putting this little Subaru on more competitive footing." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The audio system is mounted centrally on the dash and is within easy reach. The climate control system is pleasantly simple to operate via well-marked, easy-to-grip knobs that are mounted below the radio." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Cargo

The 2016 Crosstrek has 22.3 cubic feet of cargo space with all the seats in place and 51.9 cubic feet of space with the rear seats folded. These figures are both low compared to class rivals. Split-folding rear seats are standard, and reviewers say they are easy to maneuver. Critics think the cargo space feels small with the seats up but can fit a bicycle with them folded. They are impressed with the array of interior storage spaces for smaller items.

  • The Crosstrek has … considerably more [cargo space] than the Nissan Juke, but it trails crossovers like the Ford Escape and Subaru Forester by a healthy margin. At least the flat load floor means you're able to maximize the space provided." -- Edmunds
  • "And that compactness is fully evident when trying to load it with luggage while the rear seat is up. Subaru claims 22 cubic feet, but the actual space feels smaller. Fold the rear seat forward and you'll enjoy almost 52 cubic feet, enough to carry a bike and maybe a board." -- Kelley Blue Book (2014)
  • "With the rear seats in place, cargo volume for the XV Crosstrek is 22.3 cu ft, big enough to accommodate three golf bags. It's a simple operation to fold them down -- they split 60/40 and form a flat load floor." -- AutoTrader (2014)
  • "Subaru has thoughtfully included a nice rubbery-plastic cargo tray for the rear cargo floor. Interior small-item storage is better than average. There are bottle holders in all four doors (the front doors have additional storage space as well), a large open compartment in front of the shifter, a bi-level tray aft the shifter, two console cupholders with a retractable cover, and a generously sized glovebox." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
