2012 Smart Fortwo Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2012 Smart Fortwo was new.

Interior: 8.0

Although the 2012 Smart Fortwo is a tiny car, there’s no need to worry about being cramped. Reviewers say there’s plenty of head- and legroom for tall drivers and passengers. They also say the cabin is well laid out and has an attractive design, though the plastics are hard. However, the Fortwo’s cabin does not come well-equipped, and lacks basics like a radio and air conditioning.

  • "Cabin materials are solid and well assembled; switchgear has a quality feel. The overall ambiance is budget, however, with lots of hard plastic and very few padded surfaces." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The Smart Fortwo, despite its tiny appearance, is quite spacious inside. There's enough room for full-sized adults to be pretty comfortable.” -- Edmunds

The Smart Fortwo only seats two people, but test drivers say you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the amount of room the Fortwo has. There’s ample head- and legroom, so two tall adults shouldn’t have a problem getting comfortable. The base Fortwo has optional heated seats, and black leather seats are optional on Passion models.

  • "Surprising headroom and legroom even for those well over 6-feet, but ForTwo's narrow cabin means two adults ride almost shoulder-to-shoulder. The seats are supportive, with good side bolstering. An upright driving position prevents occupants from feeling dwarfed by surrounding traffic." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Despite its comically small exterior proportions, the Smart Fortwo is remarkably roomy inside. There's enough head- and legroom for 6-foot-plus occupants, while the passenger benefits from an additional 6 inches of seat travel." -- Edmunds

Interior Features

The base Smart Fortwo doesn’t come with air conditioning or power windows, but you can add these features. A radio also isn’t standard, but the base Fortwo has a radio installation prep package that has an auxiliary input jack. When you add a radio, you get a USB port. Cruise control, a trip computer and a steering wheel with cruise control buttons are also optional. Choosing the Passion Coupe or Cabriolet gives you a lot more features, such as power windows and paddle shifters, and gives you access to optional navigation and a surround sound system.

Even though the Smart Fortwo’s interior is simple, reviewers say the controls are accessible and the interior is attractive.

  • "The interior is pleasantly modern in design, with a choice of several monochromatic and two-tone color palates available." -- Edmunds
  • "Controls are simple, well laid out, and easy to reach." -- Consumer Guide

The Smart Fortwo has a very small cargo hold for the class. In both the coupe and convertible, there’s only 7.8 cubic feet behind the seats, and 12 cubic feet if it’s packed to the roof. Even though these numbers are very small, some reviewers still say the Fortwo’s cargo area is sufficient for a few grocery bags.

  • "Meager overall. ForTwo has a separate-opening back window above a drop-down tailgate, and the cargo area is only big enough for about six grocery bags." -- Consumer Guide
