2012 Smart Fortwo Overview

Most reviewers agreed that the 2012 Smart ForTwo’s meager output means the Fortwo struggles to maintain freeway speeds. Test drivers also agreed that its automated manual transmission is crude and unresponsive. Additionally, critics said that the Fortwo does not feel stable or planted at speed, especially when subject to crosswinds or being passed by large tractor trailers. The Fortwo achieves 34/38 mpg city/highway, which is fairly good for the class, but slightly worse than the comparably-sized Scion iQ. The Fortwo is available as a hardtop or convertible.

The Smart Fortwo only seats two, but reviewers said that the cabin is fairly spacious given the car’s overall size. They wrote that the seats are comfortable and supportive, and that there is plenty of headroom. One reviewer also noted that the Fortwo’s cabin is assembled with quality materials. The base Fortwo does not come with many standard features. Air conditioning and a stereo with auxiliary and USB ports are both available, as are features like navigation, cruise control and Bluetooth. There is 7.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the seats or 12 cubic feet if you load your cargo to the roof, which is tiny for the class.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2012 Scion iQ is bigger than the Fortwo, and as such, has two rear seats and more overall cargo capacity. The iQ earns slightly better fuel economy ratings than the Fortwo.

The 2012 Honda Fit ranks highly among small cars, thanks in part to its spacious, versatile interior and easy-to-drive nature. The Fit also seats five and has significantly more cargo space than the ForTwo.
