2011 Smart Fortwo Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2011 Smart Fortwo was new.

Interior: 7.9

The 2011 Smart Fortwo is a tiny car, but reviewers are pleased with its cabin. The interior is well-constructed, spacious and comfortable. The Fortwo has a lot of room up front, but it’s short on cargo space and standard features. If you want a radio and air conditioning, for example, they aren't standard.

  • "Cabin materials are solid and well-assembled, and switchgear has a quality feel. The overall ambiance is budget, however, with lots of hard plastic and very few padded surfaces." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The Smart has enough room to comfortably seat tall adults." -- Edmunds
  • "The interior is light and airy and big enough to provide room for someone who's six-five. There are normal-car attributes like climate control and a nice stereo and power locks and windows. It's only when you glance over your shoulder and realize that the car ends right . . . about . . . there . . . that you're reminded that you might want to apply motorcycle tactics to your driving technique." -- Automobile Magazine

The first thing you should know about the Fortwo is that it only seats two people, so if you need more space you’ll have to consider other options. However, if a two-seater suits your lifestyle, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the amount of room in the Fortwo. There’s ample head- and legroom, so tall adults shouldn’t have a problem sitting behind the wheel.

  • "Though the Fortwo's cabin is on the snug side, it is still comfortable for two tall adults. Legroom is ample, with an extra 6 inches provided for the passenger seat, which also folds flat for added cargo space." -- Edmunds
  • "The seats are supportive, with good side bolstering. An upright driving position prevents occupants from feeling dwarfed by surrounding traffic. Great visibility all-around. Tall build and wide doors make for easy entry and exit. A lack of a tilt steering column may compromise comfort for some drivers." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Inside the cabin, the Fortwo is not just roomy but positively spacious. The high roof offers lots of headroom and the transparent roof (in the upfitted 'Passion' edition) lends the car an unexpected airiness." -- Los Angeles Times

Interior Features

The base Smart Fortwo doesn’t come with much. You have to add features like air conditioning and a radio. There are two audio packages: Smart Radio and Smart Premium Radio. Both audio packages have a radio, speakers and auxiliary input jack, but the Smart Premium Radio is MP3 compatible and has a six-disc CD changer.

For 2011, Smart has added a highline radio that has a touch-screen display, navigation, Bluetooth, iPod interface and a CD/DVD player. This feature is only available on Passion models. Even though the Smart Fortwo’s interior is simple, reviewers say the controls are accessible and the interior is attractive.

  • "The gauges are easy to see; speedometer is unobstructed, and optional tachometer and clock are situated above the dash in free-standing pods. Controls are simple and well laid out." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The interior is simple but attractive, with a number of monochromatic and two-tone options available. The Passion trim level's cloth upholstery is available in several vivid colors with whimsical patterns that breathe some life into the well-designed cabin." -- Edmunds

The Smart Fortwo has a very small cargo hold for the class: only 7.9 cubic feet up to the beltline and 12.0 cubic feet if it’s packed to the roof. Even though these numbers are small, some reviewers still say the Fortwo’s cargo area is ample enough.

  • "At first look, the Smart seems too small to be practical. It's not. Rather, it is a marvel of packaging efficiency." -- Edmunds
  • "Meager overall. ForTwo's rear cargo area is big enough for about six grocery bags. Heat from the rear-mounted engine makes the cargo floor warm to the touch on long trips. A tiny glovebox offers barely enough space for an owner's manual, though assorted cubbies offer some small-item flexibility." -- Consumer Guide
