2010 Smart ForTwo Overview

If you want a small coupe or convertible that can tackle city streets and you don’t need lots of interior space, you should consider the 2010 Smart Fortwo. Though it is an extremely small two-seater, reviewers thought that its driver and front passenger accommodations were surprisingly comfortable. The Fortwo doesn’t have much cargo room, but there’s enough space for a trip to the grocery store. Another benefit of the Fortwo is that it has great fuel economy ratings. It gets up to 33/41 mpg city/highway, though it does use premium gasoline.

Reviewers said that the 2010 Fortwo is very maneuverable, which makes it an able city car, but they also said its performance has some significant drawbacks. Many test drivers wanted more power from the Smart Fortwo’s 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine. They also said the Fortwo felt unstable on the highway. The Fortwo lacks a lot of standard features, like air conditioning and a stereo, which most small cars have. Available features include a stereo with an auxiliary port, power windows, keyless entry and heated seats. It does, however, have a good amount of safety features for the class, including four-wheel anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control. The Fortwo’s safety scores are low for the class.

Other Cars to Consider

With seating for five, significantly more cargo space than what’s available in the Smart Fortwo and very good fuel economy ratings, the 2010 Honda Insight is a wise alternative to the Fortwo. The Honda Insight isn’t fast by class standards, but reviewers said it is surprisingly fun to drive for a hybrid. The Insight also has good safety scores.

The 2010 Mini Cooper is a small car that’s good for driving around the city, but it’s also a lot more practical than the Smart Fortwo. The Mini Cooper Hardtop and Convertible have two rear seats and more cargo space than the Smart Fortwo. The Cooper is also considered one of the most fun-to-drive cars in the class, and it has very good fuel economy ratings.
