2012 Scion xD Review

Although they liked how easy it is to maneuver in tight spaces, reviewers said that most rivals deliver better performance and have a more comfortable cabin than the 2012 Scion xD.

Pros & Cons

  • Easy to maneuver
  • Less cargo space than rival hatchbacks
  • Limited seat comfort

2012 Scion xD Overview

Reviewers didn’t find much excitement when driving the Scion xD, but they also didn’t find much to complain about. They said not to expect overwhelming power from its four-cylinder engine, but most agreed that it performs adequately. Many also said that both the manual and automatic transmission operate smoothly. However, one reviewer advised that sticking with the manual transmission makes the car feel livelier. The xD achieves 27/33 mpg city/highway, which is a bit low for the class. Reviewers didn’t offer much commentary on the xD’s handling, but some mentioned that the steering delivers good feedback. Some auto journalists were pleased that the xD's compact size makes it easy to navigate tight spaces and parking lots.

Some reviewers found that the xD isn’t trimmed with the highest quality materials, but there was little else in the way of criticism about interior materials’ quality. Critics appreciated that the xD’s gauge cluster is mounted behind the steering wheel, rather than atop the center stack as in the Scion xB. Others mentioned that the xD isn’t a good fit for tall folks, as it lacks sufficient headroom and has short seat-bottom cushions. Some critics also noted that rear visibility is somewhat hampered by large rear pillars. Standard equipment includes a Pioneer stereo with Bluetooth, HD Radio and USB and auxiliary input jacks. Available features include a more powerful Pioneer stereo with a touch screen, satellite radio and Pandora Internet radio capability. The xD offers up to 35.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded, which is less than the capacities of many hatchbacks.
