2011 Scion tC Review

Packed with many standard interior and safety features, the 2011 Scion tC is a good choice for shoppers who want a sporty small car that is both tech-savvy and practical.

Pros & Cons

  • Excellent safety scores
  • Standard driver’s knee airbag
  • Standard sunroof
  • Powerful engine
  • Looks sportier than it drives

2011 Scion tC Overview

The 2011 Scion tC doesn’t force you to sacrifice interior space or standard features for hip styling. In fact, you get a lot of both. It has comfortable front seats, a good amount of rear passenger space and a lot of cargo room. If you choose the tC, you’ll also get a big dose of standard features. Its list of standard safety features includes a driver’s knee airbag, which is a rarity in this class, and the tC also has great safety scores.

The Scion tC comes with a moonroof, an eight-speaker stereo with auxiliary and USB ports and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. There’s only one trim level, but a fully-loaded tC can offer HD radio, navigation, Bluetooth and an upgraded stereo.

The tC is practical for a sporty small car, but some reviewers said its handling wasn’t as sporty as its looks. However, the tC’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine makes more horsepower and torque than many of its classmates. The trade-off to the tC’s power is lower fuel economy estimates than the most economical small cars. The 2011 tC averages 23/31 mpg city/highway with either manual or automatic transmissions.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2011 Mini Cooper is a good choice if you’re looking for a sporty small car. Three trims are available (Cooper, Cooper S and John Cooper Works), and each version makes more power than the one before it. Along with good performance, the Mini offers great fuel economy and very good safety ratings. Just be aware that the four-seat Cooper’s small size means that it doesn’t have much passenger or cargo space.

If you want a coupe with good performance and higher fuel economy ratings than the tC, check out the 2011 Kia Forte Koup. Like many two-door cars, the Forte Koup has a tight back seat, and there’s not as much cargo space as you’ll get in the tC. While the Forte Koup doesn’t have as many standard features as the Scion tC, it still comes with a lot, including Bluetooth, a USB port and steering wheel-mounted controls.
