Keep Your Family Protected in These Small SUVs

Some small SUVs fare markedly better than others when it comes to safety data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Moreover, some compact and subcompact SUVs come packed with standard active safety features, while others only offer a few technologies at an additional cost.

We compared crash test ratings, as well as standard and available safety features, to help determine which compact and subcompact SUVs offer the best safety. Our list includes both mainstream and luxury crossovers.

It’s important to note that we’ve excluded most crossovers that were completely redesigned for the 2019 model year, since updated crash test data is not yet available. Additionally, for many 2019 SUVs that are carryovers, not all safety data is in. So, we refer to U.S. New safety scores and official crash test ratings from the comparable 2018 models. All models on this list received safety scores of at least 9.0 out of 10. We have put them in order from better to best.

Remember that U.S. News scores change regularly as new data and expert reviews become available. Therefore, the scores in this article may not be the same as the scores in our new car reviews.
