Find Out Which Affordable Midsize SUV Ranks Highest in Safety

There are nearly two dozen midsize SUVs on the market now. They provide the space and capabilities many families require, plus a sense of safety in their high seating positions and utility-minded designs.

However, not all of the vehicles in this very popular class are equally safe. Only two came close to a perfect U.S. News safety score of 10 out of 10, and only one could top this list of 17 midsize two- and three-row SUVs.

Each of these vehicles has been evaluated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), or both. We’ve noted in the slides which tests have been completed for the 2019 model year and which scores rely on nearly identical 2018 models. Nearly every model in the class has undergone some testing, and we included all the midsize SUVs that had data available.

In addition to traditional crash tests, the IIHS now evaluates headlight performance and front crash prevention in vehicles that have advanced driver assistance systems available. Many of these SUVs do have this tech as standard or optional equipment, so we noted those results too.

We update our scores as new information becomes available, so the data in this slideshow might not match the most recent data in our reviews. The following vehicles are ordered from the least safe midsize SUV in our rankings to the most safe.
