Travel in Luxury and Safety With These SUVs

Safety is an attribute many luxury buyers cite as a top reason why they want a sport utility vehicle or crossover. However, not every luxury SUV is the same when it comes to safety. It’s crucial to explore the safety scores of the vehicles you’re considering before you choose your new ride.

Our rankings and reviews use a score derived from crash and safety system testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). You may notice that many of the vehicles that ace the crash tests are all-new or redesigned models. That’s because the NHTSA and IIHS continually update their criteria, raising the bar that automakers have to clear if they want top crash test marks.

It's important to note that size matters in crash tests. A bigger vehicle will be safer, all things considered. Two vehicles with the same crash test scores might not be equally safe.

We tried to break ties where they occurred by rewarding larger vehicles and vehicles with more standard safety features.

We frequently update our new car rankings as new information becomes available. The scores shown on the following slides may not precisely match the information on each vehicle's full review.
