Cars That Top the Safety Charts

Safety is a huge factor in many car buyers' decision-making process. Fortunately, higher safety standards have made cars much safer than they were just a generation ago. Along the way, the organizations that test cars have made their tests more rigorous, so consumers can still find the top performers.

For this list, we’ve included the 11 vehicles that have perfect safety scores in our rankings of new cars, plus Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). For 2017 models, the bar was raised to get the top-notch TSP+ rating. Not only do cars have to earn top scores in the IIHS' five crashworthiness tests and an Advanced or Superior score for front crash prevention technology, but they also must receive an Acceptable or Good rating for the effectiveness of their headlights. Only 46 vehicles from the 2017 model year earned a TSP+ designation across all segments of the new car, truck, and SUV market.

We’ve also listed our top-scoring minivan on this list, as safety is a primary buying criterion in the family-friendly segment. Not all of the cars on this list have been thoroughly evaluated by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), so you’ll want to revisit our new car rankings through the year as NHTSA's ratings factor into our safety scores.

Most of the cars on this list feature several of the must-have car tech features for 2017. Please visit our story on the SUVs with top safety ratings to see what’s tops in the SUV world.
