2009 Saab 9-7X Review

The 2009 Saab 9-7X can’t match the refinement, performance or safety of other luxury midsize SUVs.

Pros & Cons

  • Powerful available V8 engine
  • Poor performance
  • Terrible fuel economy
  • Poor safety ratings

2009 Saab 9-7X Overview

The 2009 Saab 9-7X is based on the 2009 Chevrolet Trailblazer, and test drivers who drove it when it was new said that it shows. They said the 9-7X has a cheap-feeling interior and unrefined, truck-like performance, which stood out when compared with other luxury SUVs in its class. The 9-7X also has the worst safety ratings of any luxury crossover. Not only is it uncomfortable to drive on paved roads, it doesn’t redeem itself with spectacular off-road performance.

The base six-cylinder engine on the 9-7X is underpowered and gets terrible gas mileage, and the available V8 engine is even worse. There are a few things to like about the 9-7X, including an interior that’s slightly nicer than a Trailblazer’s and prices that tend to be less than other luxury midsize SUVs.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2009 Acura MDX has a well-made, attractively-designed interior, sporty handling and excellent safety ratings. The MDX also has standard all-wheel drive and gets better gas mileage than the Saab 9-7X.

If you like the 9-7X because it’s a Saab, the 2009 Volvo XC90 has a similar Swedish pedigree. The XC90 stands out with good safety ratings. When it was new, reviewers said that the XC90 handles smoothly on paved roads as well.
