2012 Ram HD

2012 Ram HD Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2012 Ram HD was new.

Interior: 8.6

Reviewers say the Ram 2500 and 3500 have the best interiors in their class, thanks to great build quality, high-tech features and luxurious materials. They say the seats are plenty comfortable, and note that even base trims feel nicer than many other trucks. One tester writes that opting for the touch-screen navigation can make the controls more complicated, though that’s a common complaint with most navigation systems.

  • "The 2012 Ram 3500 takes a page out of the Ram 1500's playbook by offering the best interior among all pickups.” -- Edmunds
  • "Inside is both capable and comfortable, with full width, split-bench seats front and rear, full power accessories, and even satellite radio.” -- Motor Week
  • "Inside the 2012 Ram Heavy Duty pickups is a very un-workman-like interior. Even base trims feel a bit upscale, and upscale trims feel downright plush.” -- Kelley Blue Book

Base, regular cab models of the Ram HD come standard with seating for three across the manually-adjustable front bench, as well as vinyl upholstery with the option to upgrade to cloth. Base Mega and Crew cab models come standard with the same three-seat front bench, as well as a folding rear bench seat that can seat three more people, for a maximum of six. Higher trim levels offer front bucket seats, cloth or leather upholstery and power adjustments. Test drivers say the seats are plenty comfortable and that the front bench seat is roomy enough even for larger occupants.

  • "The Regular Cab has plenty of room for two people, three across if you don't mind the floor hump. The biggest guy we could find who claimed to be 325 on a good day had no qualms about space.” -- New Car Test Drive
  • "Reclining rear seats are one of the perks to be had with the Mega Cab. …” -- Kelley Blue Book

Interior Features

Like most pickup trucks, the Ram HD’s standard features list is basic. Base models come standard with a six-speaker stereo system with auxiliary audio input, the Uconnect voice-controlled multimedia system with Bluetooth phone connectivity and a tilt-adjustable steering column. However, upgraded trims can offer incredible luxury for a pickup truck. The top-of-the-line Laramie Limited trim level offers heated and ventilated leather front seats, heated rear seats, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, a rearview camera, nine-speaker Alpine audio system with Bluetooth streaming audio and a Garmin-based navigation system.

Reviewers write that the Ram’s interior is incredibly well-made and upscale for its class. Lower-end models with basic knobs and switches are easy to use and intuitive, but one test driver notes that models with touch-screen controls can be complicated to use. Many testers comment that the interior of the more-expensive trims would feel more appropriate for a luxury sedan than a work truck capable of towing more than 11 tons.

  • "Once inside, the interior is remarkably refined for something so work oriented.” -- Car and Driver
  • "Switchgear is straightforward, with audio and navigation controls above climate controls in the center stack, plus operating controls for the Tow/Haul mode, exhaust brake and so on.” -- New Car Test Drive
  • "The controls are within easy reach and user-friendly, except for the audio system when paired with the optional navigation. In this configuration, the absence of hard buttons and knobs needlessly complicates some of the most basic functions. Fortunately, the steering-wheel-mounted controls help to alleviate this problem.” -- Edmunds

Automakers rarely publish the amount of cargo space inside a truck’s cab, and that stays true for the Ram HD trucks. However, choosing a regular cab model offers less lockable storage space than a crew or Mega cab, which offer back seats where you can stash your stuff. The 2012 Ram HD trucks now offer the RamBox in-bed storage containers that critics love on the full-size Ram 1500. These boxes, which are lockable compartments located in the walls of the truck bed, can be used as coolers or for cargo drivers may not want to put in the cabin. Test drivers do note that the Ram HD has in-cabin storage compartments that can fit things like file folders and laptops.

  • "Interior storage is generous, with plenty of bins and pockets to supplement the dual gloveboxes." -- Edmunds
  • "A massive center console is long and deep enough to swallow a larger laptop or multiple tablets; it can even hold a set of hanging files." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Interior storage is extensive with forty-odd places to put things of myriad sizes. Upper and lower door pockets are complemented by a variety of shapes from the broad tray on the dash that we emptied on the first corner to the under-floor storage areas behind the front seats; you can't reach these from the driver's seat but the liners are removable for cleaning and locks are available." -- New Car Test Drive
