2017 Ram 1500 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 Ram 1500 was new.

Interior: 8.7

Many full-size trucks have quality cabin materials in their higher trims, but the 2017 Ram 1500 features high-end materials even in its lower trims. The Ram 1500's interior has an upscale feel that would surprise most people, and the cabin remains quiet around town and on the highway. The front seats provide all-day comfort, and the rear seats in the Crew and Quad cabs have ample legroom for adults to stretch out.

The Ram 1500 doesn't offer many standard features, but it has plenty of available features to like, including a 10-speaker audio system, a power sunroof, and the user-friendly Uconnect infotainment system. There are three different bed lengths available (depending on which cab you choose), and the shorter beds are also available with in-bed storage compartments.

  • "Lower trim levels feel well built with quality materials, and upper trim levels are predictably very well executed, with available wood trim and premium leather upholstery that class things up quite a bit." -- Edmunds
  • "It offers an unbeatable ride/handling combination along with a high level of refinement, classy interiors, and some unique features." -- Consumer Guide (2015)
  • "It's exceptionally quiet inside, too, regardless of surface." -- Car and Driver (2013)

The Ram 1500 seats up to six, depending on which cab you choose. You'll need to go with either the Quad or Crew Cab to seat six because Regular Cab models only seat three. All cab configurations are available with front bucket seats, which reduce total seating capacity by one.

Vinyl upholstery is standard, and available seating features include cloth or leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated back seats, a heated steering wheel, and power-adjustable pedals.

You'll enjoy the comfortable front seats, which remain supportive even on long drives, and the good visibility in all directions from the driver's seat. Adults will have no trouble getting comfortable in the back seat of the Quad and Crew Cab models thanks to the generous amount of legroom.

  • "Seat comfort is excellent, especially for long road trips, with soft padding and adequate support in the right places. If you go with the crew cab, there's plenty of legroom in the rear and matching seat comfort." -- Edmunds
  • "In the Quad Cab version rear-seat legroom is generous, but the Crew Cab models offer even more legroom for stretching out." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "Large, firmly padded seats offer impressive long-drive comfort and back support. Visibility is generally good, though front roof pillars are rather thick." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Ram 1500 include a USB port and a six-speaker audio system. Available features include power locks, power windows, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power sunroof, Bluetooth, a 10-speaker audio system, satellite radio, navigation, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, and the voice-activated Uconnect infotainment system with a 5- or 8.4-inch touch screen and smartphone app integration.

Like most full-size trucks, the Ram 1500 is short on standard features. Even power windows and door locks are optional. Of the available features, the Uconnect infotainment system is the most desirable. The Uconnect system is responsive, and the menu layouts make it easy to find exactly what you need. Its voice-recognition software also responds well to verbal commands.

There are two versions of Uconnect. The lower-end version features a perfectly adequate 5-inch screen, but the higher-end version stands out for its 8.4-inch screen, which features large, easily visible buttons. There are even redundant physical buttons on the dash for many functions, if touch-screen controls aren’t your thing.

  • "For infotainment controls, the Ram features two available Uconnect systems. The 5-inch center screen is decent, but our favorite is the upgrade 8.4-inch screen with its large virtual buttons, quick response times and logical menu layouts. As an added bonus, there are several physical buttons and knobs that duplicate those tasks for the more traditional owner" -- Edmunds
  • "Both the small and large display screens are functional and fairly easy to use (although I wouldn't want to mess with it while I was driving), and the USB/SD card connectors are pretty handy." -- Jalopnik (2013)
  • "Chrysler's voice-recognition system for phone, audio and navigation is one of the industry's best. Chrysler also provides conventional controls for audio and climate and an 8.4-inch touch screen. The gauges are clear and easy to modify to display the information you prefer." -- Detroit Free Press (2013)

The Ram 1500 is available with bed lengths that vary depending on which cabin you prefer. Regular Cab models are available with either a 6-foot-4-inch bed or an 8-foot bed. Quad Cab models feature a 6-foot-4-inch bed. Crew Cab models feature either a 5-foot-7-inch bed or a 6-foot-4-inch bed.

All beds except for the 8-foot bed are available with the RamBox storage system that is built into the bed rails. These bins can accommodate all different types of equipment, including hitches and tie-down straps, as well as everyday items like groceries. The cabin has plenty of small-item storage space as well.

  • "The Ram provides plenty of standard and optional storage spaces. The quad cab has a clever fold-out flat floor space when you flip up the 60/40 rear seats, while the crew cab features watertight storage compartments under the rear floor as well as shallow bins under the flip-up backseat." -- Edmunds (2014)
  • "The interior hosts numerous storage cubbies, bins, and wells. Front-bench-seat models with optional premium cloth upholstery have a fold-away center armrest that doubles as a storage area, but it’s really too shallow for anything more than cell phones and iPods." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "Perhaps one of the neatest features of the Ram are the RamBox storage cubbies, the optional weather-tight bins on either side of the bed just above the wheel wells. They eat into the width of the cargo bed, but they're also perfect for stowing and securing towing hitches, tie-downs, gloves -- even groceries." -- Automobile Magazine (2013)
