2014 Ram 1500 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2014 Ram 1500 was new.

Interior: 8.6

The 2014 Ram 1500's interior receives top marks from reviewers, many of whom say that the cabin is the nicest in the segment. Some especially like the high-end materials and real wood trim used in the upper trims. Reviewers also say that the Ram 1500's interior is very quiet. Overall, test drivers write that the Ram 1500's cabin is a pleasant place to pass time, with comfortable seats in the front and back and an easy-to-use infotainment system.

  • "The Ram 1500 has the nicest interior of any full-size pickup." -- Edmunds
  • "The 2014 Ram pickup is a nice place to climb in, sit down and take a ride." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Inside, the Ram remains the most pleasant and luxurious pickup truck you can buy." -- Automobile Magazine (2013)
  • "It's exceptionally quiet inside, too, regardless of surface." -- Car and Driver (2013)
  • "High-grade leather seating surfaces with ‘tooled’ detailing, leather covered dashboard and armrests with color-contrast stitching, and real walnut wood trim add to the Longhorn's classy feel." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Ram 1500 Regular Cabs seat three, while Quad and Crew Cabs seat up to six. Vinyl seats are standard on the base model, while cloth seats, front bucket seats, heated, ventilated and power-adjustable front seats and different types of leather upholstery are available. A heated steering wheel is also optional. Reviewers say the front seats are spacious, supportive and comfortable for long periods of time and that outward visibility is good. Test drivers say that the Quad Cab's back seats offer good legroom, and the space in the Crew Cab is even more generous.

  • "The front seats themselves are soft, yet strike an adequate balance between support and comfort. The crew cab's rear seat is very comfortable, offering loads of legroom and an agreeable seatback angle." -- Edmunds
  • "In the Quad Cab version rear-seat legroom is generous, but the Crew Cab models offer even more legroom for stretching out." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Once aboard, Ram's large, firmly padded seats offer good long-haul comfort. Visibility is very good all around." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Interior Features

Standard equipment on the base 2014 Ram 1500 includes a USB port, an auxiliary input and a six-speaker stereo. Available features include power windows, mirrors and door locks, navigation, satellite radio, a seven- or 10-speaker stereo system and a voice-activated Uconnect infotainment system, which includes Bluetooth, smartphone app integration and an 8.4-inch touch-screen display.

Reviewers say the Ram 1500's gauges are legible and generally think that Uconnect is one of the easier-to-use infotainment systems available, and say that its virtual buttons on the touch screen are easy to see. Some also appreciate that there are redundant knobs and buttons for audio and climate systems so you don't have to make these changes through the touch-screen interface.

  • "The touch buttons are large and easy to see at a glance, while physical knobs and buttons provide much appreciated redundant control. Updates to the touchscreen system have made it even easier to use and more visually pleasing than previous models." -- Edmunds
  • "A new climate control package has also jumped on board for 2013, allowing the driver to use either the touchscreen or a set of easy-to-manipulate dials and buttons. Likewise, the center stack features redundant controls for the audio system as well, which means buyers aren't forced into playing with the Uconnect system unless they want to." -- Autoblog (2013)
  • "Both the small and large display screens are functional and fairly easy to use (although I wouldn't want to mess with it while I was driving), and the USB/SD card connectors are pretty handy." -- Jalopnik (2013)
  • "Chrysler's voice-recognition system for phone, audio and navigation is one of the industry's best. Chrysler also provides conventional controls for audio and climate and an 8.4-inch touch screen. The gauges are clear and easy to modify to display the information you prefer." -- Detroit Free Press (2013)

All 2014 Ram 1500s are available with a 6-foot 4-inch bed, while Regular Cabs and Crew Cabs are also available with an 8- or 5-foot 7-inch bed, respectively. RamBox, Ram's lockable storage compartments in the bed sidewalls, are available with all but the 8-foot bed. Reviewers like the RamBox compartments, saying they add utility and security, allowing users to lock away things like trailer hitches and tie downs in a watertight compartment. They also like that they can be locked or unlocked with the key fob for easier access. One critic expresses concern that the RamBox compartments limit one's ability to put a tonneau cover on the bed, and mentions that the boxes reduce the width of the truck bed. Test drivers say there are lots of cubbies in the cabin for storing smaller items.

  • "Perhaps one of the neatest features of the Ram are the RamBox storage cubbies, the optional weather-tight bins on either side of the bed just above the wheel wells. They eat into the width of the cargo bed, but they're also perfect for stowing and securing towing hitches, tie-downs, gloves -- even groceries." -- Automobile Magazine (2013)
  • "The interior has numerous small storage bins and cubbies. Front-bench-seat models have a fold-away center armrest that houses open cup holders and a covered storage area that's large but fairly shallow." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "According to one of the engineers I spoke with, Ram boxes add a little bit of weight to the truck, and they also take some capacity from the bed, so there are drawbacks. Plus, if you ever decided to put on a cap or tonneau cover, they'd be rendered ineffective (unless Ram has some wickedly expensive Ram box-specific accessories in the works)." -- Jalopnik (2013)
  • "The Ram provides plenty of standard and optional storage spaces. The center console bin is quite large, while the Crew Cab features watertight storage compartments under the rear floor as well as shallow bins under the flip-up backseat." -- Edmunds (2013)
