Pros & Cons

  • Excellent fuel economy with V6 engine
  • Attractive, first-rate cabin
  • Supple ride
  • No performance advantage of small V8 over V6

2013 Ram 1500 Overview

The Ram 1500 received a new V6 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission for 2013, and test drivers were impressed with the peppy acceleration that this powertrain provides. There are two available V8 engines. Some mentioned that the smaller V8 doesn't offer any noticeable advantage over the V6, but most agreed that the larger V8 makes the Ram 1500 feel very powerful. An automatic transmission is standard on all models. With the V6 engine, the 2013 Ram 1500 gets up to an EPA-estimated 17/25 mpg city/highway, which is excellent for the class. The Ram 1500’s rear suspension uses coil springs, which is unusual for a truck, and it’s available with an adjustable air suspension. With either setup, reviewers agreed that the Ram 1500 has a supreme ride quality and buttoned-down handling. When properly equipped, the 2013 Ram 1500’s maximum towing capacity is 10,450 pounds.

Auto writers agreed that the 2013 Ram 1500's cabin is attractively styled and built with first-rate materials. Regular cab models seat up to three while Quad and Crew Cab models seat up to six. Most reviewers found the front seats comfortable and supportive, and some said the Crew Cab's rear seats are very spacious. A USB port, automatic headlights and a locking tailgate are standard on the 2013 Ram 1500. Available features include a 10-speaker audio system, navigation, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, power windows and door locks, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats.

Other Trucks to Consider

Test drivers wrote that the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 can tow a bit more than the Ram 1500 when properly equipped, and its available 5.3-liter V8 was a reviewer favorite for its ample power in all situations.

According to reviewers, the 2013 Ford F-150 has a range of potent engine choices, including its available turbocharged V6 engine. The F-150 has one of the highest towing capacities in the class, and the available SVT Raptor model was praised for its excellent off-roading capability.
