2013 Porsche Panamera Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2013 Porsche Panamera was new.

Performance: 8.9

Test drivers agree that few cars can match the 2013 Porsche Panamera’s combination of thrilling performance and a composed highway ride. One critic also writes that the Panamera’s precise steering and exceptional handling make it more fun to drive than the BMW M5.

  • "The 2013 Porsche Panamera is an accomplished, luxurious grand touring car as well as an engaging, shockingly capable high-performance car." -- Edmunds
  • "The Panamera GTS has it all over the M5 in driving pleasure. Most notably, the Porsche's steering feel is worlds better. When you push it, as with all great cars, the GTS feels as if it shrinks around you. The Porsche therefore is easier to place, responds more fluidly, and is just more fun to drive." -- Motor Trend
  • "This thing just pillages a country road. The off-throttle overrun sound is like some kind of Martian stock car." -- The Wall Street Journal (Panamera GTS)
  • "On Interstates it's an impeccable long-distance, long-hours road warrior; on city streets it's smooth and luxurious; and on devilish curves its capabilities are beyond reproach." -- Kelley Blue Book

Acceleration and Power

The base Panamera and Panamera 4 feature a 300-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6 engine. The EPA reports that the 2013 Panamera gets 18/27 mpg city/highway, which is similar to the ratings that the Audi A8 and Jaguar XJ get. A 400-horsepower 4.8-liter V8 comes with Panamera S and 4S models, while the Panamera GTS has a 430-horsepower version of the same engine. Panamera Turbo and Turbo S models have twin-turbocharged 4.8-liter V8 engines that produce 500 and 550 horsepower, respectively. All models come with a seven-speed automated manual transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard on the Panamera 4, 4S, GTS, Turbo and Turbo S.

The Porsche Panamera S Hybrid is powered by a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine and an electric motor, which produce 380 horsepower combined. An eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard. The EPA reports that the Panamera S Hybrid gets 22/30 mpg city/highway, which is better than what the Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid gets.

Reviewers love the Panamera GTS’ powerful V8 engine, but one test driver says that even the base V6-powered Panamera offers exceptional performance. Another auto writer points out that the Panamera’s automated manual transmission makes exceptionally quick gear changes that are also smooth and comfortable during normal driving.

  • "Under moderate acceleration, shifts are absolutely imperceptible to your backside, and yet the needle drops so quickly it's hard to believe it's not all simulated." -- Automobile Magazine (Panamera GTS)
  • "The V8-powered Panamera is capable of incredible performance and the turbocharged V8 borders on supercar acceleration. Yet power can be served up in measured increments or muscle-car wallops." -- Edmunds
  • "The GTS's star attraction is its torque-rich 4.8-liter V8. ..." -- The Wall Street Journal (Panamera GTS)
  • "Even the base model, with the 300-horsepower V6, delivers impressive performance, and the increasingly more-powerful versions go all the way to incredibly awesome." -- Kelley Blue Book

Handling and Braking

Test drivers say that precise steering and athletic handling make the 2013 Panamera feel as nimble as a small sports car, but they also praise the Panamera for its comfortable, composed ride. In a direct comparison, one reviewer notes that the Panamera outperforms cars like the BMW M5, which feels big and cumbersome when pitted against the 2013 Panamera GTS.

  • "Steering is always precise and handling is comparable to that of much, much smaller sports cars." -- Edmunds
  • "… the M5 just drove too big. Whereas the GTS ‘[Is] just the opposite, lithe and well-controlled, driving smaller than it is.’” -- Motor Trend (Panamera GTS)
  • "Whilst transporting your white-shoe friends out to East Egg, the Panamera GTS glides serenely on its air springs (double wishbones in front, multilink rear)." -- The Wall Street Journal
  • "The sophisticated suspension deals with anything the pavement serves up, the brakes set the standard for stopping performance, and the sum is an overall competence that makes ordinary drivers feel like heroes." -- Kelley Blue Book
