2017 Porsche Macan Overview

Is the 2017 Porsche Macan a Good Used SUV?

The Porsche Macan is a great pick if you’re shopping for a used luxury compact SUV. It’s a blast to drive, thanks to its brawny engine options and agile handling. It’s quite refined as well, with its top-notch cabin materials, comfy front seats, and a pleasant ride quality even on rough pavement. That said, there’s a price to pay for this style and performance. The Macan is by far one the most expensive SUVs to buy and maintain in its class. Before settling on this Porsche, consider more affordable yet still sporty alternatives like the 2017 BMW X3.

Which Model Year of the Porsche Macan Is Best?

Porsche introduced the Macan as an all-new SUV for 2015, and there really isn’t a bad pick among model years. You’ll find exciting handling and strong performance no matter where you look. That said, there are a few details worth considering.

The 2017 model year brought the biggest changes. The Macan gained available Apple CarPlay and more standard safety features, including a rearview camera, parking sensors, and lane departure warning. Porsche also added new Macan GTS and base models with 360- and 252 horsepower, respectively, and a Performance package for the top-level Macan Turbo, which boosts its output to a searing 440 horsepower. If you're interested in any of these configurations, shop for models from 2017 and after.

Which Used Porsche Macan Model Is Right for Me?

The 2017 Macan is offered in four trim levels: Macan, Macan S, Macan GTS, and Macan Turbo. We suspect most shoppers will be happy with the base model. It comes well-equipped with features like a 7-inch touch screen, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, a USB port, tri-zone automatic climate control, leatherette upholstery, a power tailgate, remote keyless entry, rain-sensing windshield wipers, lane departure warning, parking sensors, and alloy wheels. The Porsche Macan S trim adds a 340-horsepower engine and larger brakes.

The Porsche Macan GTS replaces the base engine with a 360-horsepower engine, and it has other performance upgrades like a sport exhaust and adaptive suspension. Adaptive headlights, leather upholstery, and heated front seats are also standard in the GTS. Lastly, the Porsche Macan Turbo trim comes equipped with a 400-horsepower engine, navigation, and a Bose stereo. It’s worth noting that all of these features were also optional on the lower trim levels, so look carefully for them when you’re shopping for a used model.

Other available features include a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, a Burmester stereo, a rear-seat entertainment system, and a 360-degree parking camera. You can also find models with driver assistance features like blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning. There’s also a Sport Chrono package, which adds a stopwatch, launch control, and additional driving modes.

What Does Porsche's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Porsche offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles 13 years old or less and with fewer than 124,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale date. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Porsche extends the original new-car warranty to six years or 100,000 miles. If the CPO vehicle is past its original new-car warranty term (four-years/50,000-miles), Porsche will cover the CPO vehicle for two years with unlimited mileage. Each CPO Porsche must pass a 111-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Porsche warranty page carefully.

Porsche’s CPO program is below average for a luxury carmaker, according to our research. Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Jaguar all have better programs.

2017 Porsche Macan Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2017 Porsche Macan or 2017 Jaguar F-Pace?

The 2017 Jaguar F-Pace and Porsche Macan are both fine options if you want a performance-oriented luxury SUV that delivers sharp handling and has punchy engines to choose from. While each offers a quality cabin, the F-Pace’s is just a bit more practical. It has a larger cargo area and an available diesel engine that gets up to 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, which is much better than the Macan’s fuel economy. Used F-Pace models are typically less expensive as well. There's no wrong answer here, so go with the SUV that best fits your preferences and budget.

Which Is Better: 2017 Porsche Macan or 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class?

The 2017 Mercedes GLC is another good pick in this class, though for different reasons. The GLC focuses more on driving comfort than sporty handling. It soaks up rough pavement nicely and provides a roomier backseat than the Porsche. The GLC also dazzles with its top-notch materials and loads of standard features, and used models are often less expensive to buy and maintain. If you simply want a luxe family-friendly SUV, the GLC is the better option. On the other hand, stick with the Porsche for superior driving performance.

Which Is Better: 2017 Porsche Macan or 2017 Audi Q5?

The 2017 Audi Q5 ranks near the back of the luxury compact SUV class. The Q5 is surely a fun-to-drive SUV, but it can’t match the handling or engine performance of the Macan. The Q5 rates poorly for predicted reliability, and it has dated styling and an aged infotainment system. It also offers fewer advanced safety features than the Macan. Skip the Audi for the Porsche.

2017 Macan Performance

How Does the 2017 Porsche Macan Drive?

The 2017 Macan offers a few engine options, starting with a 252-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the base model. The Macan S and GTS models have a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 with 340 and 360 horsepower, respectively. Last but not certainly not least, the Macan Turbo has a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 with 400 horsepower (440 horsepower when equipped with the Performance package). All come with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

There’s a little something for everyone to love in this lineup. The standard Macan scoots up to speed briskly and provides ample passing power on the highway. The Macan S, GTS, and Turbo models all offer progressively racier performance, and each can sprint from zero to 60 mph in around 5 seconds.

Porsche’s refined dual-clutch transmission complements all of these engines quite well, serving up prompt and smooth gear changes. If there is a complaint, the Macan’s fuel-saving engine stop-start system is somewhat harsh, though you can disable it.

The Macan’s driving dynamics are impressive, with accurate and nicely weighted steering complemented by strong brakes that bring this Porsche to a stop quickly. The suspension is superbly balanced as well, keeping the SUV stable around corners while still soaking up rough pavement nicely. An adaptive suspension dials in this ride-and-handling balance even further.

Does the 2017 Porsche Macan Get Good Gas Mileage?

The Macan gets low fuel economy for a compact SUV. The standard Macan returns just 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. This rating dips lower to 17/23 mpg city/highway with V6 models.

2017 Porsche Macan Towing Capacity

The Macan can tow up to 4,400 pounds when properly equipped.

How Many People Does the 2017 Macan Seat?

The Porsche Macan is a 2-row SUV with five seats. The roomy front seats provide excellent support even on longer trips, and the driving position is comfortable. However, legroom is rather stingy in the Macan’s second row. There’s more than enough room for kids, but adults will likely feel cramped. Leatherette upholstery is standard; heated, ventilated, and leather seats are available.

The cabin showcases elegant styling and is teeming with quality materials, including soft-touch plastics, crisp metallic trim, and many plush upholstered surfaces. The interior fit and finish is also excellent.

How Many Car Seats Fit in the 2017 Porsche Macan?

The Macan has two full sets of LATCH connectors for installing child safety seats.

2017 Porsche Macan Features

All Macan models come standard with a 7-inch touch screen, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, USB ports, and a CD player. Available features include a navigation system with Bose and Burmester stereos, as well as a rear-seat entertainment system with two 10-inch touch screens.

The infotainment system responds quickly to inputs and has simple on-screen menus. It also supports Apple CarPlay, which makes it easy to sync your iPhone’s apps and functions. On the other hand, the dashboard takes some time to get used to. It’s angled downward and has a cockpit-like feel. There might be too many audio and climate control buttons for your liking, and it doesn’t help that they are placed too close to each other.
