2016 Porsche Macan Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 Porsche Macan was new.

Interior: 8.5

The 2016 Porsche Macan earns praise for its sporty cabin styling and high-end materials. Test drivers report that the Porsche Macan's dashboard controls and touch-screen display work well and are easy to operate after some initial use. While reviewers say the Macan's rear seats have good room for adults, they note that the cargo hold is small for the class.

  • "In recent Porsche tradition, the Macan also has an excellent interior whether you go with a base model or decide to check off option boxes to your heart's content (and your wallet's pain)." -- Edmunds
  • "The Macan's interior is a seamless blend of comfort and performance that borrows styling cues from the Panamera sedan." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "Inside, materials and finish are not an issue. The Macan continues Porsche's upward trend in its interior treatments' overall quality." -- AutoWeek (2015)
  • There are fantastic seats, a center console covered in buttons, and a great new steering wheel derived from the one in the 918 Supercar. I'd look for this to become the standard across Porsche's lineup since it's just leaps and bounds better than the other wheels that they offer, even in the 911. Other elements, like a cover for the CD player, feel cheaper than anything in the Audi. So outside it looks leaps and bounds better than any other crossover in this class, and the interior is right on par." -- Jalopnik (2015)

The Porsche Macan seats five and has standard leather upholstery. Eight-way, power-adjustable front seats are standard, and 14- and 18-way power-adjustable front seats, heated rear seats and heated and ventilated front seats are optional. According to automotive journalists, the Porsche Macan's front seats offer great comfort and are supportive. Reviewers agree that despite the Macan's sloped roofline, back-seat passengers of average height have good head- and legroom, but taller passengers may feel a bit cramped.

  • "And, as we've come to expect from Porsche, even the base seats are exceptionally well contoured and afford long-haul comfort as well as reassuring side-to-side support for more spirited roads. The two optional seat designs throw in additional adjustments, including those for the cushion and side bolsters. However, there is a price to pay for this overtly sporty ambience, as the Macan gives away some cargo and rear passenger space to its rivals." -- Edmunds
  • The 'flying' roofline still leaves adequate headroom in the rear seats (split 40/20/40), although lanky passengers do find themselves staring at the headliner." -- Automobile Magazine (2015)
  • There's enough space in the back seat for two medium-sized adults or three kids. Headroom is impressive, given the coupe-like flow of the Macan's roof, and a 5'8" passenger has more than enough leg room behind a 5'10" driver. Taller rear passengers are squeezed on leg room first. It seems most of the Macan's 3.5-inch wheelbase reduction compared to Cayenne translates to less leg room in back." -- AutoWeek (2015)
  • "The king is secure on his sport-seat throne, thanks to ideal orthopedic support and unyielding rib and thigh bolsters." -- Car and Driver (2015)

Interior Features

The 2016 Porsche Macan's list of standard features includes an 11-speaker stereo with a 7-inch touch-screen display, Bluetooth, a USB port, heated side mirrors and tri-zone automatic climate control. Available features include a 14-speaker Bose sound system, a 16-speaker Burmester sound system, a PCM infotainment system, a panoramic sunroof, navigation, a surround-view camera system that provides a 360-degree view around the vehicle, lane change and lane keep assist systems, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control and Porsche Car Connect, which allows you to use your smartphone to locate your vehicle, access vehicle information and contact Porsche in the event of a breakdown.

Test drivers report that although the 2016 Macan's dashboard features lots of buttons and switches, the layout is straightforward and the controls are easy to learn, overall. A few also note that the Macan's touch-screen system works well and is more simple to operate than some rivals' systems.

  • "From the Porsche Macan's driver seat, the dashboard layout clearly mirrors many other modern Porsche designs, with triple dials for the instruments, a flat dash top and a center console that looks as if it belongs in a Learjet. Although there are many buttons, it doesn't take long to acclimate to them thanks to a logical layout." -- Edmunds
  • "The Macan adopts a version of the 918's striking multifunction steering wheel in a cabin that amplifies Porsche's surprising new command of interior design and intuitive interfaces. As in every new Porsche, the familiar sloping center console is replete with analog switches, but they're more manageable than most screen-based menus." -- Automobile Magazine (2015)
  • "The center console is wide, and edged with lots of switches in the dense Porsche fashion. Porsche has not taken to replacing genuine buttons with multilayered data switches, and we're good with that." -- AutoWeek (2015)
  • "The dashboard features a 7-inch color touch screen that runs an optional high-tech infotainment system called Porsche Communications Manager (PCM). PCM groups the car's audio, navigation (if equipped) and communication functions into a single easy-to-use interface that packs a 40 GB hard drive, a USB port and Bluetooth connectivity." -- Left Lane News (2015)

The 2016 Porsche Macan has 17.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in use and 53 cubic feet of room with them folded. That's not much overall cargo space compared to rivals, and reviewers note that competitors like the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 offer much more cargo room. A power liftgate is standard.

  • "With the rear seats in use, the Macan's cargo capacity is 17.7 cubic feet, about 10 cubes shy of the Audi SQ5 and BMW X3. Fold them down and you'll still only have 53.0 cubes, making it smaller than most rivals apart from the Range Rover Evoque." -- Edmunds
  • "One price of style is the stingiest cargo hatch in the class: at a maximum 52.9 cubic feet, it is roughly eight percent smaller than the Audi's hold." -- Automobile Magazine (2015)
  • The racy hatch angle and the sleek roof curvature whack more than a third of the Audi Q5's cargo volume (from 29 to 18 cubic feet), the price of aping the 911's profile. Sacrificing the back seat yields 53 cubic feet of space and a flat, nearly level load floor." -- Car and Driver (2015)
  • "The Macan's 17.7 cubic-feet of luggage space with the rear seats in place is a far cry from the Audi Q5's 29.1 cubic feet. So when you plan a weekend getaway in the Macan, pack creatively." -- Road and Track (2014)
