2015 Porsche Macan Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2015 Porsche Macan was new.

Performance: 9.4

Automotive journalists agree that remarkably nimble handling and a powerful base engine make the new 2015 Porsche Macan one of the most fun-to-drive, sporty options in the class. Reviewers are impressed that the 2015 Macan rides comfortably over road imperfections, and they praise its responsive steering and strong brakes.

  • "You may be looking at the world's sharpest-handling SUV. …" -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Make no mistake, the new Macan comes packed with the speed, handling and engaging driving character one would rightfully expect from the maker of the 911 and Cayenne." -- Edmunds
  • "Even its name -- the Indonesian word for ‘tiger’ -- is appropriate for the way the vehicle eagerly devours the curves when pushed. Yes, there are other high-performance compact crossovers on the market, but none with the Macan's level of performance or single-minded dedication to driving enjoyment. For the time being, it's a totally unique product in the compact premium crossover market." -- Motor Trend
  • "If I were looking for a car in this class, the Macan would be my first choice. Compared to cars like the GLK, Evoque, and Q5, it's the ‘sportiest’ offering in the segment. I wouldn't call it a sports car, though." -- Jalopnik

Acceleration and Power

The all-new 2015 Porsche Macan S is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine with 340 horsepower. A twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 with 400 horsepower comes with the Macan Turbo. A seven-speed automated manual transmission (PDK) comes standard on both models. The Macan S gets an estimated 17/23 mpg city/highway, which is low for the class, but comparable to what performance-oriented SUVs like the Audi SQ5 get.

Automotive writers agree that the Porsche Macan S gets up to speed effortlessly, and that the Macan Turbo produces blistering acceleration off the line. A few critics mention that turbo lag isn't a problem with the Macan Turbo, and that it accelerates just as quickly as the base Porsche 911. According to reviewers, the Macan's seven-speed automatic transmission offers sharp, quick shifts.

  • "The power upgrade from S to Turbo is obvious on the track or the road -- the Turbo just has more oomph out of corners. It's head-snapping when you floor it, as opposed to just quick. And as angry as we are at Porsche for abandoning the clutch-operated manual in its new line, we'll concede the PDK suits the Macan as well as any vehicle." -- AutoWeek
  • "The one and only gearbox is a crisp-shifting, paddle-controlled seven-speed dual-clutch automatic." -- Car and Driver
  • "The turbo 3.0-liter V6 in the base 2014 Porsche Macan S pulls with plenty of gusto, and the lightning-quick shifts from the PDK transmission don't hurt a bit." -- Edmunds
  • "The engine in the Turbo, with 400 horsepower and 406 pound feet of torque, is an absolute Leviathan. Power is immediate with basically no turbo lag. Combine that with Porsche's PDK, which is still the best gearbox out there, and you have a combination that is at home on track and in Sport Plus is brutal. The Macan S and its 340 horsepower is definitely slower than the Turbo, but it's still a strong combo." -- Jalopnik

Handling and Braking

According to reviewers, the all-new 2015 Macan is one of the best-handling vehicles in the class. They report that it’s particularly nimble and feels composed in turns, while also offering strong brakes and a comfortable ride over imperfect roads. Automotive journalists are impressed with the Macan's accurate steering, but a few note that it can feel light. All-wheel drive and an off-road mode are also standard, which adjusts throttle response, transmission shift points and the all-wheel drive system to maximize traction in off-road conditions. Additionally, an optional air suspension can add 1.6 inches of ground clearance.

  • "A 14.3:1 steering ratio compares to 15.9:1 for the Q5. And even accounting for the Macan's extra-burly power, its precisely tuned, finely weighted electromechanical steering and body control seemed its biggest physical edge over its Audi cousin." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "We'd guess most Macan buyers are more likely to try a road course than the back country, yes, and there the amazement increases. Chasing a 911 around the FIA-approved track outside Porsche's customer delivery center in Leipzig, the Macan goes more like an Audi RS4 Avant than an SUV. Height never seems an issue. Macan's lower mass concentration relative to the Cayenne is obvious." -- AutoWeek
  • "The brakes provide a firm pedal with stopping power strictly proportional to applied pressure. Likewise, the springs, the anti-roll bars, and the dampers check body rock and roll." -- Car and Driver
  • "Driven briskly around turns, the Porsche Macan is easily one of the most entertaining small crossover SUVs in existence. Thankfully, this impressive handling capability doesn't translate to a stiff-legged ride over bumps and ruts. Indeed, the Macan is pretty comfortable, particularly when equipped with the adjustable air suspension. It's also pleasingly quiet at interstate speeds." -- Edmunds
  • "Despite the winter rubber limiting grip and producing more understeer than desired, the S proved predictable, fun, and plenty quick, its PTV Plus showing a grin-inducing propensity for rotating the rear under acceleration. Moreover, the brakes - front 13.8-inch discs with six-piston calipers, rear 13.0-inch discs with single-piston calipers - delivered ample stopping force, PTM effortlessly put down power, and the steering provided commendable linearity, albeit with minimal feel." -- Motor Trend
