2015 Porsche Macan Review

An all-new model for 2015, the Porsche Macan boasts raucous turbocharged engine power, thrilling handling, excellent predicted reliability, and a luxurious interior. This all comes at a price, though; the Macan's estimated ownership costs are outrageous compared to most rivals.

Pros & Cons

  • Sports-car-like handling
  • Powerful engines
  • Luxurious interior
  • Great predicted reliability score

  • Cramped rear seat
  • Very high cost of ownership

2015 Porsche Macan Overview

Is the 2015 Porsche Macan a Good Used SUV?

A used 2015 Macan is a no-brainer purchase if you want legendary Porsche sports car performance and the practicality of an SUV. Still, there are some better options on the market if you're looking for lots of rear passenger room or a giant cargo hold.

Used 2015 Porsche Macan Performance and Interior

Each inaugural Macan has one of two twin-turbocharged V6 engines: a 3.0-liter version in the Macan S produces 340 horsepower, while the Macan Turbo features a 3.6-liter 400-horsepower variant. Both Macan models deliver awesome power and acceleration, with zero to 60 mph times of 5 seconds or less. There is minimal lag from the turbochargers, and a standard seven-speed automatic transmission delivers smooth upshifts right on target. The trade-off for these impressive engines is low fuel efficiency for the class; both Macans get 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

Standard all-wheel drive rounds out the Macan’s drivetrain. Like most Porsches, the Macan delivers thrilling driving dynamics and athletic steering. It also rides comfortably over rough pavement and stays stable on long drives. Some used Macans may feature an electronic adaptive suspension or an adjustable air suspension.

The 2015 Macan beats out most class rivals with its upscale and luxurious interior. It features many soft-touch surfaces and a sleek design that ties everything together. All models feature standard leather seats, and you can find used Macans with heated or ventilated front seats. Available front sport seats in the Turbo trim provide excellent levels of comfort and support, though the back seat might feel too tight for adult passengers. The Macan has two complete sets of LATCH child-seat connectors on the outboard rear seats and a middle-seat tether anchor.

Standard features in the Macan include dual-zone automatic climate control, a USB port, Bluetooth, an 11-speaker sound system, bi-xenon headlights, and a touch-screen infotainment system. Operating the interface is straightforward, but it takes some time to get used to the number of buttons on the dashboard. Other available features include navigation, a premium Bose sound system, and a high-end Burmester audio system.

How Safe Is the Macan?

The 2015 Macan did not go undergo any crash testing, but that's common for luxury and performance vehicles. It doesn’t come standard with any driver assistance or advanced safety features, but some used Macans may have a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, and blind spot monitoring.

Should I Consider Another Used Macan?

The Porsche Macan SUV was introduced in 2015 as an all-new model. There's little reason to consider a 2016 Macan, as it will likely cost you more. However, there were a few improvements made for that model year, including the addition of standard tri-zone automatic climate control and a newly available 360-degree camera.

Which Used Porsche Macan Is Right for Me?

The 2015 Porsche Macan is available in two trim levels: Macan S and Macan Turbo. Aside from a few features, the main difference between the models is the engine. Both turbo powertrains deliver thrilling muscle, so you'd be better off saving some money with a base model.

To offset the Macan’s high initial price tag and cost of ownership, go for a certified pre-owned model. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Porsche extends the original new-car warranty to six years or 100,000 miles. If the CPO vehicle is past its original new-car warranty term (four years/50,000 miles), Porsche will cover the CPO vehicle for two years or 50,000 miles – though Porsche places total mileage limits on this warranty. Each CPO Porsche must pass a 111-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Porsche warranty page carefully.

2015 Porsche Macan and Other SUVs to Consider

Which Is Better: 2015 Porsche Macan or 2015 Porsche Cayenne?

Porsche's other SUV, the 2015 Cayenne, has the same blistering performance, excellent reliability, and luxurious interior as its diminutive sibling. You'll likely pay more for the midsize Cayenne, but you'll get more cargo space and rear passenger room. The Cayenne is also available as a hybrid (reviewed separately) or a diesel version. Note that the Cayenne Diesel was affected by the Volkswagen emissions scandal, so it may be hard to find. If you want a high-performance SUV, either Porsche is a great choice. Your decision will likely come down to your budget and how much room you need.

Which Is Better: 2015 Porsche Macan or 2015 Audi Q5?

The 2015 Audi Q5 is a decent luxury SUV, but it doesn't match up to the Macan. The Q5 has merely average reliability and a high cost of ownership, though the Macan will likely still be more expensive. The Q5 has decent engine power and engaging handling, but its stiff ride quality hurts its overall performance compared to the Macan. Both SUVs are impressively upscale for the class, but the Q5 has more rear passenger space. In general, the Macan is a better choice, but you might be able to save a little money with the Q5.

Which Is Better: 2015 Porsche Macan or 2015 BMW X4?

There are few reasons to consider a 2015 BMW X4 over the Macan – almost everything the X4 does, the Macan does better. The BMW has powerful turbocharged engine options and athletic handling, but it still trails the Macan’s class-leading performance. The Macan is also more refined inside, though neither SUV offers great passenger space. One reason to consider the BMW over the Porsche is for its significantly lower total cost of ownership.
