Is the Porsche Macan a Good SUV?

The Porsche Macan is a great luxury compact SUV. It has an upscale, high-tech cabin and supremely comfortable front seats. It truly excels on the road, where its dynamic handling makes it a joy to drive. It also has a class-leading predicted reliability rating. However, cargo space and rear-seat legroom are both subpar for the class. As of this writing, Porsche has not released information on the Macan Turbo or GTS models.

Should I Buy the Porsche Macan?

The Macan is a fantastic choice in the class, but it’s expensive. A few rivals, such as the Jaguar F-Pace and BMW X3, have similar athleticism at a lower price. Both have more cargo space too. The X3 does not come standard with all-wheel drive, though it does offer it as an option.

Should I Buy a New or Used Porsche Macan?

The 2019 Macan belongs to a generation that debuted for the 2015 model year. For 2016, Porsche added an optional surround-view parking camera and two new trims: a base model with a turbo-four engine, and the GTS model with a twin-turbo V6. A rearview camera, lane departure warning, and front and rear parking sensors became standard too. Porsche made no major changes for 2018.

The Macan received a refresh for the 2019 model year. As of this writing, complete information has not been released, but the new Macan gets a few more standard features, including a 10.9-inch touch screen, a navigation system, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. If the new standard tech features aren’t important to you, consider a used model.

How Much Does the Porsche Macan Cost?

Porsche Macan Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: Porsche Macan or Audi Q5?

The Audi Q5 is a great luxury compact SUV. It has more cargo space than the Porsche, as well as standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Audi strikes a delicate balance between comfort and sportiness, though the Macan claims the prize for being more athletic. While the Q5 has a higher predicted reliability rating, the Audi’s starting price is $7,000 lower than the base Porsche’s MSRP. Both are good vehicles, though, so choosing between them is a matter of preference.

Which Is Better: Porsche Macan or Porsche Cayenne?

The Porsche Cayenne is a luxury midsize SUV. Porsche redesigned the Cayenne for the 2019 model year, endowing it with some aspects of the luxurious Panamera. The Cayenne has more cargo space and rear-seat passenger room than its smaller sibling. In many other respects, these two SUVs are similar. Both have a range of capable engines, sharp handling, and premium cabins with lots of features. However, one key area of difference is price. The base Cayenne’s starting price is about $15,800 higher than the Macan’s. Budget, size, and preference are the main determinants between these two Porsche vehicles.

Macan Interior

How Many People Does the Macan Seat?

The Porsche Macan is a two-row SUV that seats five people. Partial leather upholstery and eight-way power-adjustable front seats come standard. Seating upgrades include leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, 14-way power-adjustable front seats or 18-way power-adjustable sport seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.

The front seats are roomy and great for all-day comfort. The rear seats are less enjoyable, as legroom is especially tight. While this Porsche seats five on paper, three taller riders will have a hard time squeezing into the back.

Macan and Car Seats

The Macan has two complete sets of LATCH connections for securing child car seats. The rear middle seat has a single tether anchor.

Macan Interior Quality

As you’d expect from a Porsche, the Macan’s cabin is awash in luxurious materials and soft-touch surfaces.

Macan Cargo Space

With the rear seats up, the Macan has 17.6 cubic feet of cargo space. Folding them down reveals 52.9 cubic feet. Both figures are below average for the class, and rivals such as the Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC have more room. A power liftgate comes standard.

Macan Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

The standard Porsche Communication Management infotainment system features a 10.9-inch touch screen, navigation, voice controls, satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a 10-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, and four USB ports. Apple CarPlay is available, as are 14-speaker Bose and 16-speaker Burmester sound systems, push-button start, proximity keyless entry, and a panoramic roof.

The touch screen is easy to use. It responds quickly to inputs, and its crisp graphics make it easy to see clearly. There are plenty of buttons on the dash, and while that makes it easy to control some functions, it also clutters up the center console. Apple CarPlay is available, but Android Auto is not.

Macan Performance

Macan Engine: Strong and Capable

The base engine in the Porsche Macan is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. It makes 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The Macan S has a 3.0-liter V6 that produces 348 horsepower and 352 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is standard.

The four-cylinder model has little trouble zipping around town, and the engine provides sufficient power for most driving situations, but it’s not exhilarating. The available V6 is the same engine that powers the larger Porsche Cayenne's base model. It’s much livelier, delivering rapid acceleration by class standards. The automatic transmission makes slick, timely shifts.

Macan Gas Mileage: Unknown

At the time of this writing, neither the EPA nor Porsche has issued any fuel economy estimates for the 2019 Macan.

Macan Ride and Handling: Little the Ma-can-t Do

The Macan is one of the most athletic SUVs in its class. Nimble and agile, the Macan is most at home driving along twisty roads. The ride is comfortable as well, and the suspension easily absorbs road flaws. All-wheel drive is standard. Additionally, this crossover has some light off-road capabilities.

Which Porsche Macan Model Is Right for Me?

As of this writing, Porsche has only released official information on two Macan trims: the base Macan and the Macan S. The base trim is generously equipped and available with many comfort and safety options, making it a fine pick. Shoppers in search of the V6 engine will need to jump up to the Macan S.

Porsche Macan

The 2019 Porsche Macan has a starting MSRP of $49,900. For that price, you’ll get a turbo-four engine, a 10.9-inch infotainment display, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a navigation system, satellite radio, a 10-speaker stereo, four USB ports, Bluetooth, partial leather upholstery, eight-way power-adjustable front seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, a power liftgate, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, lane departure warning, automatic headlights, and alloy wheels.

The Premium package costs $3,110. It adds Apple CarPlay, a 14-speaker Bose stereo, heated front seats, and automatic high beams. The Premium Plus package ($6,500) has those features plus a panoramic sunroof, 14-way power-adjustable and ventilated front seats, proximity keyless entry, and push-button start. Most of these items are also available as standalone options. Other upgrades include a 16-speaker Burmester surround-sound system ($5,700), 18-way power-adjustable front sport seats ($2,080), and a heated steering wheel ($280).

Several safety features are offered too, including adaptive cruise control for $1,170 and a surround-view parking camera for $1,200. You can opt for lane keep assist and lane change assist for $700 each or $1,380 together.

Porsche Macan S

The Porsche Macan S has a starting MSRP of $58,600. It has a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine that puts out 348 horsepower. Otherwise, it has most of the same features and packages as the base model, though pricing may vary.

The Final Call

The Porsche Macan is a great luxury compact SUV. It boasts athletic handling, a stellar predicted reliability rating, and an elegant cabin with a straightforward infotainment system. Not many rivals can match the Porsche’s luxury and sportiness, but plenty of them can compete on the pricing front. This is a good vehicle, but it never hurts to shop around, especially with other worthy alternatives like the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 out there.

At the time of this writing, information on some Macan models, such as the Macan Turbo and GTS, has not been officially released.

Don’t just take our word for it. Check out comments from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.

  • "After a day of navigating Palma de Mallorca's narrow, twisting cliff-side roads, and dodging packs of cyclists, we can confirm that Porsche's small SUV is still one of the best in class. Despite being a crossover, it does what all Porsches do best: deliver a great, sporting drive." -- Autoblog
  • "No matter how you slice it, the Macan offers an attractive design inside and out, exceptional build quality and ergonomics, and the handling characteristics you'd expect from a company responsible for the 911." -- AutoTrader
  • "Overall, we think the Macan has become even more appealing thanks to its myriad well-considered design, technology and chassis enhancements. And it seems that Porsche has once again cornered the market on the truly sporty SUV, even when putting the Macan up against the best its (primarily) German rivals have to offer. If you're looking for all the fun of a hot hatchback, but with a bit more practicality and a lot more power, the 2019 Porsche Macan needs to be on your short list." -- Edmunds
