2018 Porsche Macan Review

The 2018 Porsche Macan ranks among the top third of luxury compact SUVs. It has a posh interior and exceptional performance, even when compared to non-SUVs.

Pros & Cons

  • Outstanding acceleration
  • Nimble handling and quiet ride
  • Posh interior
  • User-friendly infotainment system
  • Subpar fuel economy
  • Undersized cargo hold
  • More expensive than most rivals

Is the Porsche Macan a Good SUV?

The Porsche Macan is a fantastic luxury compact SUV, highlighted by outstanding acceleration and sensational road manners. Its standard all-wheel drive is a rarity in this class. Inside, the Macan has high-end materials and comfortable, supportive front seats. It also has a user-friendly infotainment system and lots of standard and available tech features. However, the Macan’s cargo capacity is lower than many class rivals'. Also, it has low fuel economy estimates and a higher price tag than most classmates.

Should I Buy the Porsche Macan?

The Porsche Macan comes with an above-average starting price for the class. If your budget allows, it’s a great choice in the luxury compact SUV class. If not, there are other options in the class that provide comparable value at a more affordable price. The BMW X3 and Jaguar F-Pace are two SUVs with similar athleticism to the Macan. As an added bonus, both have more cargo space than the Porsche. Another classmate, the Audi Q5, has a solid balance of sportiness and comfort. These three SUVs are great alternatives to the Macan, each costing $5,000 less than the Porsche.

Should I Buy a New or Used Porsche Macan?

Porsche did not make any major changes to the Macan for 2018, so if you're open to driving a used vehicle, you could likely save money with a very similar 2017 or older Macan. The SUV was introduced for the 2015 model year, and it's only gone through a handful of changes since. 2016 models gained a newly available surround-view camera, while Porsche added new base and GTS models for 2017 (each with a new, distinct engine), as well as standard safety features like a rearview camera, parking sensors, and lane departure warning. The base 2017 Macan features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 252 horsepower, while the GTS has a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 good for 360 horsepower. The Macan S (340-horsepower 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6) and Macan Turbo (400-horsepower 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6) retain the same engines from 2016.

How Much Does the Porsche Macan Cost?

With a starting price of $47,800, the Porsche Macan is one of the most expensive luxury compact SUVs. Only the BMW X4 is in the Macan's league when it comes to base price; many competitors cost at least $5,000 less, and some are upward of $10,000 less.

There are three higher trims: the Macan S, Macan GTS, and Macan Turbo. All three have stronger engines, but you'll pay a premium for that extra power. The starting prices range from $55,400 for the Macan S to over $77,000 for the Macan Turbo. A fully loaded Macan can exceed $100,000.

Porsche Macan Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: Porsche Macan or Audi Q5?

Volkswagen owns both Porsche and Audi, so it's no surprise that the Audi Q5 is often compared to the Macan. In terms of sportiness, the Q5 is a very capable performer, but the Macan takes the cake. Both models have a nicer interior than most in the class, but the Q5 has more cargo space. The Q5 also has more standard and available features, including standard Apple CarPlay (an option in the Macan) and Android Auto, which isn't available in the Macan. The Audi has better fuel economy and a lower starting price than the Porsche by $6,300, making the Q5 a better overall value. However, if you're looking for the most powerful and fun-to-drive SUV, you'll prefer the Macan.

Which Is Better: Porsche Macan or BMW X3?

The BMW X3 can’t match the Macan's power output, but it’s still quite energetic and delivers better gas mileage than the Macan. The X3 also has sporty handling and a smooth ride. Inside the X3’s stylish cabin, adults have plenty of room in both rows, and there’s more cargo space than in the Porsche. However, the Macan comes out ahead in terms of luxury and safety. The X3 doesn't have any standard active safety features. By contrast, the Macan comes with lane departure warning, a rearview camera, as well as front and rear parking sensors. The Macan features standard leather and Alcantara upholstery, which is better than the X3’s standard leatherette. The Macan is a superior luxury compact SUV, but the X3's lower price tag makes it a suitable alternative.

Which Is Better: Porsche Macan or Jaguar F-Pace?

Like the Macan, the Jaguar F-Pace delivers exhilarating performance. The F-Pace boasts a powerful engine lineup and sharp handling. Still, the Macan is better in both regards. However, the base F-Pace’s diesel engine has far better fuel economy ratings than the Macan. Though the Jaguar has an upscale interior, the Porsche’s is slightly more upscale. The F-Pace has more cargo space, though. In the end, the Macan is a little better, but the F-Pace's lower price point makes it more appealing for some. If you do go with the Macan, be mindful of its woeful predicted reliability score.

Macan Performance

Macan Engine: Acceleration to Spare

The Macan might be best described as a sports car in a compact SUV's body. There are four different engines (each trim has its own powertrain), ranging from the 252-horsepower turbo-four base engine to the 400-horsepower twin-turbo V6 powering the Macan Turbo. Each engine has acceleration that matches or exceeds almost every class rival, and the high-end Turbo trim will go from zero to 60 mph in under 4.5 seconds. All engines are mated to a smooth-shifting seven-speed automatic transmission, known as the PDK.

Macan Gas Mileage: There's Always a Catch

Gas mileage is the Macan's Achilles' heel (at least for those who care about such things). Four-cylinder models get just 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, while V6 models get 17 mpg in the city and 23 on the highway. Both engines are less fuel-efficient than most class rivals.

Macan Ride and Handling: Cut Loose

This Porsche's agile handling and sharp steering will leave you feeling free to attack winding roads. You can activate Sport mode for improved driving dynamics, and there's an available air suspension to improve handling. The ride is comfortable and quiet. Standard all-wheel drive even lets the Macan handle some light off-roading if you choose.

Macan Interior

How Many People Does the Macan Seat?

Like most luxury compact SUVs, the Macan seats five people. Drivers will appreciate the good visibility in all directions. The front seats have ample room and support, and the rear seats have enough head- and legroom for most adults.

Macan and Car Seats

The Macan features two full sets of LATCH connectors for installing car seats. They're located in the rear outboard seating positions. The middle seat features a tether anchor but no lower anchors.

Macan Interior Quality

This Porsche certainly lives up to its luxury label, with a stylish, handsome interior and excellent material quality. Higher trims offer additional styling upgrades.

Macan Cargo Space

There are few areas where the Macan trails the competition, but cargo space is definitely one of them. It has roughly 18 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and a maximum of 53 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

The Macan's maximum capacity gives you enough room to haul a large cooler and some other gear for the beach or a camping trip. With all seats in use, there's plenty of room for several shopping or carry-on bags; you just won't have the space for larger items.

Macan Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

The Porsche Communication Management interface headlines the Macan's standard features. It includes a 7-inch touch screen, two USB ports, and satellite radio. Available features include navigation, a Wi-Fi hot spot, two premium audio systems, a rear-seat entertainment system, and Apple CarPlay.

The Macan's infotainment system is user-friendly, and there are lots of buttons around the touch screen if you prefer physical controls. These can look intimidating at first, but they are in fact logically arranged. While the Macan offers Apple CarPlay, it doesn't offer Android Auto, unlike some competitors.

Macan Reliability

Is the Porsche Macan Reliable?

The 2018 Porsche Macan has an above-average reliability rating of 3.5 out of five from J.D. Power. The average rating for all vehicles is a three out of five. Only the 2018 BMW X4 bests the Macan’s reliability in the luxury compact SUV segment.

Porsche Macan Warranty

The 2018 Porsche Macan comes with a four-year/50,000-mile warranty. That's similar to the warranty for most other luxury compact SUVs.

Macan Safety

Macan Crash Test Results

The 2018 Porsche Macan has not yet been put through crash tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Macan Safety Features

Standard active safety features include a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, and lane departure warning. Available features include adaptive cruise control with full stop-start functionality, dynamic headlights (which swivel to provide better lighting around corners), a surround-view camera, lane keep assist, and lane change assist.

That's a lot of features, but some rivals – such as the Mercedes-Benz GLC and the Volvo XC60 – offer driver assistance features the Macan lacks.

Which Porsche Macan Model Is Right for Me?

The Porsche Macan is available in four trims, each of which has its own engine. All-wheel drive is standard in all models. There are plenty of customizable options for every trim, so buyers have plenty of ways to make the Macan their own.

The base trim has a starting price of nearly $48,000, which is much higher than most luxury compact SUVs. However, it's well-equipped and will satisfy most buyers. It also gets the best fuel economy of any Macan.

The higher trims all feature turbocharged V6 engines that are much more powerful than the base model. That power is probably superfluous, but the Macan S is a good choice if you just have to have a V6 engine. It offers most of the same features as the higher trims but costs significantly less. The higher trims aren't a great value because you're paying significantly more for a modest power increase and little else.

Porsche Macan

The base trim is just called the Macan, and it has a starting price of $47,800. It comes with a 252-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive. In addition to the standard features, the base trim is available with two options packages.

The Premium Package ($2,590) adds a Bose audio system and front and heated rear seats. The Premium Package Plus ($5,950) includes the features of the Premium Package and adds ventilated front seats, a panoramic roof, and front seats with extra power adjustability.

Several other features, mostly style-related, can be added individually and cost anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.

Porsche Macan S

The Macan S is on sale starting at $55,400. It comes with a 340-horsepower turbocharged V6 engine. The Macan S has the same standard and available features as the base model, including the same two option packages.

Porsche Macan GTS

Next up is the Macan GTS, which has a starting price of $68,900. It features a 360-horsepower turbo-V6, an air suspension, and heated front sport seats. The only option package is the Premium Package Plus ($3,390), but several features can be added individually.

Porsche Macan Turbo

The highest trim is the Macan Turbo, starting at $77,200. It comes with a 400-horsepower turbo-V6 engine. In addition to the GTS' standard features, the Macan Turbo comes with navigation and a Bose audio system. The Premium Package Plus is available ($3,600), but in this trim, the package also includes lane keep assist.

You can also get the Macan Turbo with the Performance Package, which starts at $87,700. It has the same engine as the Macan Turbo, but it’s rated at 440 horsepower instead of 400.

The Final Call

The 2018 Porsche Macan is an excellent vehicle that deserves its spot in the upper third of our luxury subcompact SUV rankings. It delivers outstanding performance and has one of the nicest interiors in the class. There are few notable shortcomings, and not many class rivals can match the Macan in terms of athleticism or interior quality, let alone both.

If you do want to shop around, the Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Jaguar F-Pace are some worthy alternatives, but nobody will blame you if you decide the Macan is still the best.

Don’t just take our word for it. Check out comments from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.

  • "If you want a small luxury SUV with the Porsche's renowned performance, the Macan is the little brother to the Cayenne that you've been awaiting. As the least expensive Porsche, the Macan is also one sweet ticket into the prestigious brand. … Though a sub-$50,000 starting price is a deal for a Porsche, it's still a stretch for an entry-level SUV. If you want a bargain-performance SUV, look to the oft-overlooked Infiniti QX50. If you can compromise on the performance aspect, the Mercedes-Benz GLC and the Macan's Audi Q5 cousin are great alternatives." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "Then again, eye-popping speed is literally what you can get from the Macan, and for that it remains one of our top-recommended compact luxury SUVs despite its questionable value and subpar ability to carry rear passengers and luggage." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "Our experience behind the Macan's wheel leads us to conclude that the Macan is far more than just a rebadged Q5; in fact, Porsche revamped the Audi's platform from nose to tail, and the result is a uniquely capable crossover that doesn't look or feel anything like its corporate cousin. Could the somewhat space-challenged Macan be more practical? Sure, but if you harp on the modest cargo and back-seat measurements, you're missing the point. In truth, the 2016 Macan is less of a crossover competitor than it is a handy hatchback for would-be Cayman or 911 buyers who need four doors. Viewed in this light, there is no substitute for Porsche's latest product." -- Autotrader (2016)

Slow, but Rising Sales: The Porsche Macan was one of the slower selling cars in the luxury compact SUV segment in 2018, with top-selling German competitors like the Mercedes-Benz GLC and Audi Q5 each outperforming the Macan nearly 3 to 1.
