2019 Porsche Cayman Interior Review

Interior: 7.3

The 2019 Cayman may be the least expensive car in Porsche's paddock, but it feels far from economy-grade inside. An array of exquisite materials and a sophisticated interior put the 719 Cayman on par with its more expensive siblings. The seats are comfortable, and there's a respectable amount of space for a midengine sports coupe.

  • "Familiar and yet new at the same time, the 2019 Porsche 718 Cayman's interior is as beautiful as it is functional. The cockpit-oriented design caters first and foremost to the driver, with a functional sport steering wheel derived from the 918 Spyder and well-bolstered front seats offered in a plethora of colors and coverings." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Materials quality inside the 718 Cayman is impeccable, and there's a reassuring solidity underneath it all. Unlike a few similarly priced sport coupes, the Cayman's overall quality matches the rather expensive price tag." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Fit and finish is impeccable as you'd expect from a Porsche." -- New York Daily News (2017)

The two-seat Cayman comes with manually adjustable sport seats and cloth, partial leather, or full leather upholstery. The cabin is small but fittingly so for a sports coupe, and the seats are comfortable, even for larger travelers. Seating upgrades include a variety of leather and Alcantara upholsteries, heated and ventilated seats, and 14- or 18-way power-adjustable seats.

  • "The interior is roomy enough to fit drivers as tall as 6-feet 4-inches, although getting in and out of the low-slung cabin may require a bit more flexibility than with a standard car." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The cockpit is cozy but not confining. Combined with the small size of the Cayman, it feels a bit as if you're wearing the car rather than sitting in it. This is how a sports car should feel." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "The cabin is perfectly proportioned around two passengers." -- New York Daily News (2017)

Interior Features

For the most part, the Cayman's technology passes muster for ease of use and includes sleek features such as gesture control and the ability to pull up relevant menus when it senses a hand near the touch screen. However, a few reviewers say the interface lags behind those of some competitors.

The base infotainment system includes the Porsche Communication Management interface, a 7-inch touch screen, eight speakers, two USB ports, satellite radio, HD Radio, and Bluetooth. A rearview camera and front and rear parking sensors are also standard. Available upgrades include Apple CarPlay, a navigation system, a 10-speaker Bose or 12-speaker Burmester surround-sound system, dual-zone automatic climate control, a proximity key, adaptive cruise control, lane change assist, and blind spot monitoring.

  • "Porsche trails the competition when it comes to in-car technology. You can argue that these are driver's cars, and tech is irrelevant. That said, there are plenty of other driver's cars that offer more advanced systems that are easier to use." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Well-finished and smartly presented, the passenger compartment of Porsche's 2018 718 Cayman possesses a stylish and user-friendly environment that still places an emphasis on a cockpit-oriented design. The functional sport steering wheel inspired by the 918 Spyder and supportive leather-covered sport seats reinforce its driver-focused character, while the thoughtfully-laid-out dash boasts better-positioned air vents and a 7.0-inch central touch screen for the standard Porsche Communications Management system that features proximity sensors and gesture control." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "Inside, the 718 has the latest-generation infotainment system with a 7.0-inch touchscreen and easy-to-use apps. The optional navigation system was so bang-on that it included driveways to the hotel and race track." -- Motor Trend (2017)

The Cayman has a 9.7-cubic-foot trunk in the rear and a 5.2-cubic-foot cargo area at the front of the car. That's more cargo space than most midengine sports cars have, including the Cayman's convertible twin, the Porsche 718 Boxster.

  • "Storage space is ample, and thanks to the mid-engine design, two trunks are provided: a large one up front and smaller one at the rear." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "For a mid-engine sport coupe, the Cayman has a surprising amount of combined cargo space between the front and rear compartments. Compared to rival front-engine coupes, though, it falls well short. A weekend getaway with a passenger is possible, but you'd have to pack light." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "As for amenities, the front luggage compartment is extremely deep. It swallowed two pieces of luggage and two large knapsacks." -- Motor Trend (2017)
