2014 Porsche Cayman Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2014 Porsche Cayman was new.

Interior: 8.0

The 2014 Porsche Cayman's interior is praised for its abundance of high-end materials and thoughtful detailing such as optional contrast coloring, though a few critics note that it lacks the flare of some rivals' cabins. Reviewers also like the Cayman's seats, saying they're comfortable and offer ample support for lively driving. Test drivers are also pleased with the Cayman's available cargo space, noting that it has ample room for weekend trips.

  • "The Cayman's plain, utilitarian interior may lack the drama and premium feel of more upmarket models (such as the 911, which starts at $85,250), but the magic starts when you twist the ignition key (with your left hand, per Porsche tradition) and ease forward off the line." -- AutoTrader
  • "Throw in superior materials, high-tech displays and some striking color combinations (check out the optional Amber Orange leather upholstery), and you've got a genuinely premium product. The Cayman used to feel like a junior Porsche, but with its newly refined cabin, it gives up little, if anything, to the much more expensive 911." -- Edmunds
  • "Detailing is upscale throughout, especially with the optional all-leather trim that covers the entire dash." -- MSN Autos
  • "The 2014 Porsche Cayman's cabin is sleek and upscale." -- Kelley Blue Book

The two-seat 2014 Porsche Cayman comes standard with partial leather sport seats, while heated and ventilated seats, full power seat adjustment, two-tone leather, upgraded leather and seats with greater bolstering are available. Test drivers agree that the Cayman's seats offer a good driving position and ample comfort and support regardless of whether they're the base seats or optional, more aggressively bolstered seats. They add that rearward visibility could be better, citing large rear roof pillars.

  • "Snug sport seats keep the passengers in step with the fast-dancing chassis." -- Car and Driver
  • "The driving position is spot-on, the seats are comfy and they manage to provide lateral support without resorting to rib-crushing confinement. Ours were optional 14-way power sport seats with power added to the tilt-and-telescoping steering, and a memory that remembers the position of each." -- Edmunds
  • "The Cayman cockpit has the cozy feeling of a sports car, but also holds adequate room for all but pro basketball players. The feeling is forward, with good vision to the front and sides, but there's a slight bunker sensation to the rear because the engine compartment extends vertically towards the roof immediately behind the seats (which still can recline somewhat for comfort)." -- MSN Autos
  • "Gone is the claustrophobic feel of the previous cabin, replaced instead with ample headroom and a surprising amount of legroom for a segment not known for it. Ergonomics are outstanding, though outward visibility is quite limited due to the Cayman's high beltline and bulky C-pillar. The standard seats are supremely comfortable and supportive, and while the available sport seats further up the performance ante, we deem them non-essential." -- Kelley Blue Book

Interior Features

Standard features in the Cayman include a four-speaker audio system with a 7-inch touch screen, Bluetooth and an auxiliary input. Optional features include front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, the Porsche Communication Management infotainment control system, navigation, a nine-speaker audio system, a 10-speaker Bose surround sound system, a USB port and satellite radio.

Auto journalists write that the Cayman's various infotainment and climate controls are straightforward and logically arranged, and appreciate that most controls are operated with real knobs and buttons rather than through a more complicated computer system.

  • "The center stack has been cleaned up and the climate controls have been moved to a more accessible and distinct position." -- Edmunds
  • "In true Porsche tradition, the sophisticated cockpit-style layout features a driver-focused dashboard and a myriad of easily accessible controls." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The instrument cluster, dash front and center console are busy with details both for styling and because Porsche thankfully gives quick access to many features with buttons and knobs instead of electronic interfaces. In sports car fashion the center console divides the cockpit and places the shifter up high, next to the steering wheel where it belongs." -- MSN Autos

The 2014 Porsche Cayman has 5.3 cubic feet of trunk space in its front trunk and 9.7 cubic feet in the rear trunk. In total, the Cayman's available trunk space is reasonably good compared to its rivals, though most rivals have all their trunk space at the vehicle's rear. Test drivers note that the front trunk is large enough for a duffel bag and that the rear trunk is generously sized. They say that there is sufficient total cargo space for luggage for a weekend trip. Critics write that cabin storage could be better, noting that there isn't much space for small items and that the cup holders are not very sturdy.

  • "Cargo space is not a Cayman strong suit, however, as inside there just aren't many places to store your stuff, and the cupholders are flimsy. But on the bright side, its midengine layout allows it to have two trunks. The one in front measures 5.3 cubic feet and is handy for a duffel bag, while the rear hatchback/trunk measures a more useful 9.7 cubes." -- Edmunds
  • "One of the best features of the mid-engine layout is having two trunks. The Cayman's rear trunk is accessible under the large rear hatch and is shallow and wide; the front trunk is nearly cubical and deep. There's certainly enough storage for weekending." -- MSN Autos
