2012 Porsche Cayman Overview

The 2012 Cayman comes standard with a 2.9-liter six-cylinder engine that test drivers said provides strong, smooth acceleration. Cayman S and Cayman R models have more powerful 3.4-liter six-cylinder engines, which reviewers agreed provide even quicker acceleration. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while an available seven-speed automated manual earned praise for its seamless, lightning-quick shifts. According to the EPA, the 2012 Porsche Cayman and Cayman S get up to 20/29 mpg city/highway, which is good for the class. Reviewers agreed that the Cayman’s superb handling is what really helps it stand out in this class. They noted that it feels light and nimble, stays flat around turns, has stellar grip, as well as a compliant ride and accurate steering with excellent feedback.

Reviewers agreed that the 2012 Porsche Cayman has a handsome interior design that’s complemented by first-rate cabin materials. The Cayman seats two, and test drivers praised its supportive seats during cornering, but pointed out that they aren’t as spacious as the seats found in many rival sports cars. Because of the Cayman’s mid-engine layout, cargo space is split between a storage area under the hood and the trunk. At 14.5 cubic feet, the Cayman’s total cargo space is good for the class, though some critics wrote that both storage areas are unusually shaped. Reviewers also noted that the Cayman doesn’t have as many standard features as other cars in the class. The 2012 Porsche Cayman’s limited list of standard features includes Bluetooth, a USB port and a four-speaker stereo. Available features include satellite radio, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, automatic climate control, a Bose sound system and navigation.

Other Cars to Consider

If you want Cayman-like performance, but want to put the top down, consider the 2012 Porsche Boxster. Like the Cayman, reviewers agreed that the Boxster has dynamic handling and a luxurious cabin with top-notch materials.

The 2012 Chevrolet Corvette is available as a coupe or convertible, and it comes with a standard V8 engine that reviewers said is exceptionally powerful. The Corvette also offers a lot of cargo space for the class, and it’s available in more powerful Z06 and ZR1 trims.
