2019 Porsche Cayenne Interior Review

Interior: 7.1

The redesigned 2019 Porsche Cayenne marks the debut of a new generation. This Cayenne looks more sleek and modern than the outgoing model, and it features plenty of quality materials. Still, it isn't quite as functional or inviting as some rivals' interiors.

Both rows of seats are comfortable and roomy, and there are plenty of tech features. The infotainment system is relatively user-friendly, though sometimes it can be distracting to operate. Most class rivals offer more cargo space than the Cayenne.

  • "Inside, there's 15 percent more cargo room with the rear seats up and more technology and functionality at your fingertips, but in general terms the new Cayenne's interior execution is, like the exterior, also evolutionary. Signature Cayenne design elements such as the center-mounted grab handles sit adjacent to the stuff repurposed from the Panamera. It's all familiar but sharper, more focused." -- Motor Trend
  • "The interior is a bit too form-over-function for me this time." -- Jalopnik

The Cayenne seats five and comes standard with leather upholstery and eight-way power-adjustable front seats. Heated front seats, ventilated front seats, 14-way power-adjustable front seats, 18-way power-adjustable front sport seats, massaging front seats, heated rear seats, ventilated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel are available. There are two full sets of LATCH car-seat connectors.

While some class rivals have three rows of seats, the Cayenne has just two. On the bright side, both rows are comfortable and supportive, with enough space for adult passengers. Thanks to the large rear doors, it's easy to get in and out of the rear seats.

  • "Passengers in both rows will enjoy the accommodations if there are only four on board. The Cayenne seats a fifth, but the center seat in the second row isn't sculpted to comfortably support a human's spine, although it fine for temporary use. The front seats are very comfortable with generous legroom and nice side bolstering. There is adult-sized legroom in the second row, too, and the seats split/fold to increase the size of the cargo hold." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Tall and wide rear doors ensure that it's easy to climb into the back seat. The outboard seats of the split-folding bench are more like bucket seats with sports-car-like lateral support. The middle seat is best left for temporary use." -- Car and Driver

Interior Features

Standard features in the Cayenne include dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, five USB ports, Apple CarPlay, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a 10-speaker audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, and the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment system with a 12.3-inch touch screen and navigation.

Available features include a panoramic sunroof, quad-zone automatic climate control, a 14-speaker Bose stereo, a 21-speaker Burmester stereo, and a rear-seat entertainment system. Available driver assistance features include a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, night vision assist, and a surround-view camera.

The infotainment system's large touch screen is easy to see, and you can customize the icons to prioritize those you use most frequently. The menus are easy to navigate, though some functions are buried in multiple layers of menus. The screen is responsive and even reacts to gestures, though it is prone to attracting finger smudges and requires you to take your eyes off the road to adjust settings.

  • "The capacitive-touch panel isn't our favorite and quickly attracts fingerprint smudges; we prefer the predictable nature of real buttons, but the panel does move slightly when pressed, and it vibrates a bit to let you know you've done something. The large touchscreen works without much hassle once you learn the menu structure. Responses are quick, but it's easy to miss the icon you're trying to hit when the Cayenne is moving." -- Car and Driver
  • "The showstopper here is a 12.3-inch widescreen display that gives drivers access to all of the features crammed into the Cayenne. A configurable home screen gives quick access to the most frequently used features and a simple clear interface lets you find the rest without too much trouble. Proximity sensors can tell when a hand is approaching, allowing extra on-screen menus to appear, giving maximum accessibility to features when needed but leaving a clean display otherwise. Multi-touch control on maps gives the system far more of a tablet feel, and overall, it's a huge step forward." -- CNET
  • "The center console used to look like something from the control room of a 1980s nuclear missile silo, with rows of buttons framing each side. That cluttered design gives way to the clean aesthetic of glass panels featuring touch-sensitive controls with haptic feedback. They look slick, but you have to take your eyes from the road to operate them reliably, and some functions, like shutting off the engine's automatic start/stop feature, are now buried in the touchscreen's menu system." -- Road and Track

The Cayenne provides 27.1 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 60.3 cubic feet with them folded. Those numbers drop slightly in Cayenne Turbo models (to 26.3 and 59.3 cubic feet). This Porsche doesn't have the smallest cargo hold in the class, but most other luxury midsize SUVs have higher capacities. A power liftgate comes standard.

  • "Cargo capacity has increased slightly in the new Cayenne, and there's a cutout for a compact temporary spare." -- Car and Driver
