2011 Porsche Cayenne Overview

If you want a sporty vehicle, but you need more cargo and passenger space than a sports car or sport sedan can offer, consider the 2011 Porsche Cayenne. Test drivers said it’s one of the best-handling SUVs on the market, and they loved its beautifully-designed interior. The new-for-2011 hybrid model gets great fuel economy for an SUV, and reviewers said higher trim levels with larger engines have abundant power. All Cayenne models come standard with all-wheel drive. The base V6-powered Cayenne gets up to 16/23 mpg city/highway, which is about average for the class. The 2011 Porsche Cayenne is the closest thing you can get to a sports car while seating five comfortably with their cargo.

However, there are some practical limitations to keep in mind when considering the Cayenne. Most reviewers agreed that the base model is underpowered. Additionally, its firm handling may make the ride too stiff for some.

Inside, the Cayenne offers comfortable front seats and high-quality materials. The Cayenne’s button-heavy dash intimidated some reviewers, who were used to knob-based infotainment systems such as BMW’s iDrive and Mercedes’ COMAND. However, many said that once you’re familiar with the dash, operating the Cayenne’s controls becomes intuitive.

The base Cayenne comes with a power liftgate, automatic headlights and wipers, power front seats, leather, Bluetooth and a 10-speaker stereo. Like most Porsche vehicles, an extensive list of options was available when the Cayenne was new, including features like front and rear parking sensors, a backup camera, panoramic moonroof, ventilated front seats, adaptive cruise control, an upgraded stereo and a blind-spot monitoring system.

Other Cars to Consider

Shoppers should also consider the 2011 BMW X5. Like the Cayenne, the X5 offers several different models with varying performance, but adds a fuel-efficient diesel model that the Cayenne can’t match. Test drivers said the X5 handles nearly as well as the Cayenne. The X5 also offers a third row, unlike the Cayenne.

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz M-Class may not be as sporty as the Cayenne, but its handling is still confident and composed, which may appeal to shoppers who think the Cayenne rides a bit too firmly. Diesel and hybrid versions of the M-Class are also available, which closely match the Cayenne Hybrid’s fuel economy.
