2016 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.2

Test drivers agree the 2016 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid has an elegant cabin with lots of top-notch materials, including leather and wood trim pieces. The front seats are remarkably comfortable, critics write, and they add that the rear seats are spacious and versatile thanks to their ability to slide and recline. Many auto writers report that the infotainment system is straightforward, and though there are numerous buttons on the center stack, they become easy to navigate once you've learned them. Most rivals have more cargo room than the Cayenne Hybrid.

  • "Porsche's interior design aesthetic is, simply put, beautiful. There's sumptuous, finely stitched leather mixed with real wood and metal accents." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The interior is awash with attractive, soft-touch surfaces. Nearly every plastic piece on the most modest of trims can be replaced by leather, wood, carbon fiber or faux suede." -- Edmunds
  • "With a posh interior inspired by the Panamera sedan, the Cayenne sports a long, sloping center console and a plethora of buttons and switches thanks to the lack of an iDrive-style control system." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "The cabin felt like a design cocoon of fine materials, leather, metals and woods." -- Forbes (2012)

Seating

The 2016 Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid seats five and comes standard with leather upholstery and eight-way power-adjustable front seats. Heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel and 18-way power-adjustable front seats with additional side support are optional.

Test drivers report that the standard front seats are very nice to sit in, and the optional seats make it even easier to find a good driving position. They say that the rear seats are spacious and comfortable and like that the seats can slide and recline. A few auto writers report that the view out of the cabin is generally good, but the large rear roof pillars limit visibility in the back corners.

  • "The standard eight-way power seats are extremely comfortable, but 18-way sport seats are available for those who want their seating positions just right. The sculpted rear seats not only recline, but also slide fore and aft to create extra rear cargo space (they also gain cool sport bolsters in Turbo and Turbo S trims)." -- Edmunds
  • "Rear passengers aren't forgotten, with a sliding and reclining seat and a pair of LCD screens in the front headrests." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "There was ample room for two adults in the rear seats, but no third row is offered." -- MarketWatch (2012)
  • Headroom and legroom are generous. A wide range of seat travel in most all directions means drivers of most any size will find a comfortable position. A tilt and telescopic steering wheel is standard; power operation is offered, but we wish it were standard as well. Entry and exit can be tricky as you have to climb over the prominent lower-seat bolsters. Visibility is good, but thick roof pillars partially obstruct the view to the rear corners." -- Consumer Guide (2011)

Interior Features

The 2016 Cayenne S E-Hybrid comes standard with a power moonroof, Bluetooth, a USB port, HD Radio, front and rear parking sensors and the Porsche Communication Management infotainment system (PCM). Optional features include a panoramic roof, a rearview camera or surround view camera, satellite radio, a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a Burmester or Bose surround sound system, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning.

The infotainment system is simple to operate, reviewers report, but some competitors’ systems are larger and more advanced. There are lots of buttons on the center stack, according to critics, but they are easy to locate and use after becoming familiar with them.

  • "The 50-plus buttons that adorn the console can feel daunting at first, but after a slight learning curve, their arrangement makes sense. The 7-inch touchscreen is slightly smaller and dated compared to other cutting-edge widescreen displays, but is functional and easy to use." -- Edmunds
  • "Like all of Porsche's current offerings, the Cayenne's cockpit is filled with buttons, knobs and switches, and while that might sound complex, most of us still find operating conventional controls far less distracting than sifting through multiple on-screen menus." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "PCM groups the car's audio, navigation (if equipped) and communication functions into a single easy-to-use interface that packs a 40 GB hard drive, a USB port and Bluetooth connectivity." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "Yet after a couple of days things fell readily to hand, and I must admit in the end I preferred all those levers and buttons to trying to figure out options and systems on a navi screen." -- MarketWatch (2012)

Cargo

With 20.5 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear seats and 59.7 cubic feet with them folded, the 2016 Cayenne Hybrid has a smaller cargo capacity than nearly every other luxury midsize SUV, including the Lexus RX Hybrid and the gas-only Cayenne.

Critics report there are few small-item storage spaces in the cabin, though they appreciate that the air suspension can lower the vehicle to make it easier to load. A power tailgate and a climate controlled glove box are standard.

  • "On the bright side, the air suspension comes with a retractable load sill that lowers the cargo-area liftover height by a couple inches." -- Edmunds
  • "One downside is the just under 60 cubic feet of storage with the rear seats down, a bit below the competition." -- MarketWatch (2012)
  • "Under-floor storage ranges from minuscule in conventional models, to non-existent in the Hybrid. Interior storage consists of an average-size glovebox, center console, and door pockets." -- Consumer Guide (2011)
