2015 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid Review

The 2015 Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid boasts a luxurious interior, plenty of features, thrilling performance, and excellent predicted reliability. However, these benefits are countered by a very high cost of ownership.

Pros & Cons

  • Blistering acceleration
  • Engaging handling
  • Luxurious interior
  • Easy-to-use infotainment system
  • Low fuel economy for a hybrid
  • High cost of ownership

2015 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid Overview

Is the 2015 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid a Good Used SUV?

On the surface, the 2015 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid is a great used luxury midsize SUV. However, as a hybrid, it’s not the most practical choice. It earns unimpressive fuel economy estimates and has astronomical predicted ownership costs compared to rivals. Still, if you’re looking for quality, reliability, and a sports-car-like drive, the Cayenne Hybrid could be for you.

Used 2015 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid Performance and Interior

The 2015 Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid comes equipped with a supercharged V6 gasoline engine and an electric motor that together make 416 horsepower and 435 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are also standard. With a powertrain sourced from the Porsche Panamera plug-in hybrid, the Cayenne delivers instantaneous and mind-blowing acceleration. You might even find that it packs more muscle than the nonhybrid Cayenne S' twin-turbocharged V6. The Cayenne E-Hybrid can go 14 miles on just its electric motor, and it gets a combined 47 mpg-e overall. However, its fuel economy estimates of just 22 mpg combined city/highway with the V6 engine are among the lowest for a hybrid SUV.

This SUV is certainly no Boxster or 911, but it retains the sportiness and athletic handling of most other Porsches. It uses regenerative brakes, which capture the energy used to stop the car and recharge the hybrid batteries. This system operates more smoothly than in other hybrid SUVs.

The 2015 Cayenne S E-Hybrid treats its occupants to extensive comfort and luxury, with standard leather upholstery and elegant wood and metal trim pieces. Standard eight-way power-adjustable front seats offer all-day comfort, and the back seat is roomy enough for adult occupants. The second row also slides and reclines for more seating room. The five-seat Cayenne E-Hybrid has two complete sets of LATCH child-seat connectors on the outboard rear seats, as well as an additional tether anchor for the middle seat.

Standard features include Bluetooth, HD Radio, a rearview camera, navigation, parking sensors, Porsche Car Connect telematics, and the Porsche Communication Management touch-screen infotainment system. The interface is generally easy to use and responsive, but there are a lot of physical buttons and knobs cluttering the dashboard and center console. Other features you might find include a 360-degree camera, satellite radio, a Bose surround sound audio system, and a rear-seat entertainment system.

Should I Consider Another Used Cayenne Hybrid?

2015 was the first model year of the plug-in Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid, though the standard (i.e., non-plug-in) Cayenne S Hybrid debuted years earlier. You could likely save a lot of money by choosing an older standard hybrid, but you'd miss out on the E-Hybrid’s all-electric capabilities. Aside from the addition of the plug-in powertrain, the Cayenne Hybrid saw few major changes for 2015.

Which Used Porsche Cayenne Hybrid Is Right for Me?

The 2015 Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid only comes in one trim level. Standard features include leather seats, bi-xenon headlights, and the Porsche Communication Management touch-screen infotainment system.

You might also consider a certified pre-owned Cayenne E-Hybrid. For its CPO vehicles, Porsche extends the original new-car warranty to six years or 100,000 miles. If the CPO vehicle is past its original new-car warranty term (four years/50,000 miles), Porsche will cover the CPO vehicle for two years or 50,000 miles – though Porsche places total mileage limits on this warranty. Each CPO Porsche must pass a 111-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Porsche warranty page carefully.

2015 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid and Other SUVs to Consider

Which Is Better: 2015 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid or 2015 Lexus RX Hybrid?

The 2015 Lexus RX Hybrid earns a perfect reliability rating, and its predicted ownership costs are a fraction of the Cayenne Hybrid’s. Pair that with better overall fuel efficiency, and the RX Hybrid should appeal to nearly anyone looking for a hybrid SUV. Though certainly not as performance-oriented as the Cayenne, the RX still has a strong, smooth powertrain and a supple ride quality. It also offers plenty of passenger room and a quality interior. Unless you have the deep pockets for a bona fide performance vehicle from a luxury brand, the RX Hybrid is the better, more practical choice.

Which Is Better: 2015 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid or 2015 BMW X5?

The 2015 BMW X5 may not be available in a hybrid version, but when equipped with its diesel engine, it’s more efficient than the Cayenne Hybrid. The Porsche has a much better predicted reliability rating, but its ownership costs are much higher than the BMW’s. The X5 earned praise for its agile, athletic handling and lineup of muscular engines. Both SUVs have a sleek and modern interior design, though the X5 shines with its intuitive infotainment features and huge 10-inch display screen. When it comes down to it, either of these vehicles is a good choice if you’re looking for a fuel-efficient used luxury SUV.
