2013 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2013 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid was new.

Performance: 7.4

For the most part, reviewers say the 2013 Cayenne Hybrid lives up to its Porsche namesake in terms of performance. Test drivers think that its acceleration and handling are impressive. A few test drivers aren’t quite as enthused with the Cayenne Hybrid’s performance and say it isn’t much fun to drive.

  • "The Porsche Cayenne Hybrid is also impressive on the track, but in normal driving conditions, it suffers from brake and throttle quirks typical of some hybrid vehicles." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Just like the other Cayennes but with greater efficiency, V-8-like acceleration, super-smooth hybrid operation, can drive a lot using just electricity." -- Car and Driver (2012)
  • "The hybrid powertrain puts out 380 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque, besting the figures of the base Cayenne V-6, so this Porsche is not lacking in power. Having said that, it's also big and heavy, and driving it isn't really an exercise in driving excitement." -- Automobile Magazine (2012)
  • "The Cayenne S Hybrid, with its electric power steering and odd-feeling regenerative brakes, is slightly less direct and thus less enjoyable to drive. Still, it remains a Porsche and does provide a nice blend of performance and fuel economy, splitting the difference between V6 and V8." -- Edmunds (2012)

Acceleration and Power

The Cayenne Hybrid has a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 gasoline engine and an electric motor that combine to make a total of 380 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the Cayenne Hybrid has standard all-wheel drive. The Cayenne Hybrid achieves 20/24 mpg city/highway, which is good for the class but falls short of the fuel economy ratings of the Lexus RX Hybrid and the diesel-powered Volkswagen Touareg. The Cayenne Diesel, which is reviewed separately, also uses less fuel. The Cayenne Hybrid can tow up to 7,716 pounds.

Reviewers are largely impressed with the Cayenne Hybrid’s acceleration, saying that it speeds away from a stop easily. One test driver notes that the transmission shifts smoothly.

  • "With its Audi-sourced supercharged V-6 and 47-hp electric motor, the Cayenne S is nearly as quick as a V-8 model but with better fuel economy." -- Car and Driver (2012)
  • "It rests in tranquil hybrid stop/start lag, and then gallops out of the gate, engaging the 3.0-liter V-6 that makes 333 hp." -- Forbes (2012)
  • "An eight-speed automatic transmission is controlled with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts. The package went about its business in a smooth, workmanlike manner." -- MarketWatch (2012)
  • "… off-the-line acceleration from an intersection is very impressive." -- Automobile Magazine (2012)

Handling and Braking

The Cayenne Hybrid is one of the sportier luxury midsize SUVs on the market and reviewers say it handles well, especially for its heavy weight. Its steering gets negative comments from one critic who says it lacks feedback and feel. One test driver notes that the Cayenne Hybrid’s brakes offer adequate stopping power but feel strange because of their regenerative function.

  • "In Edmunds brake testing, the Cayenne Turbo came to a stop from 60 mph in 108 feet, which is exceptional for any vehicle, especially an SUV. With its regenerative brakes, the Cayenne S Hybrid fared worse with a stop of 120 feet, but that's still acceptable in this class." -- Edmunds
  • "As far as handling is concerned, the Cayenne Hybrid lives up to the Porsche name, no small deal when you factor in the weight of this vehicle, which is nearly 5,000 pounds." -- MarketWatch (2012)
  • "Less impressive is the wooden, nonlinear steering feel and feedback, which make it difficult to place the Cayenne in a corner." -- Automobile Magazine (2012)
  • "Near-transparent hybrid operation makes this drive like a slightly heavier Cayenne. The chassis has secure handling and high limits." -- Car and Driver (2012)
