Pros & Cons

  • Excellent fuel economy for the class
  • Athletic handling
  • Top-notch interior materials
  • Touchy brakes
  • Limited cargo space for the class
  • Complicated touch-screen interface

2012 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid Overview

The 2012 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid comes with a supercharged V6 and two electric motors, and test drivers said that acceleration is peppy, aside from a slight delay in power delivery from a stop, and the transition between gas and electric power is seamless. The eight-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly, they added. All-wheel drive is standard. The 2012 Cayenne Hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 20/24 mpg city/highway, which is excellent for the class. Auto writers said the Cayenne Hybrid has responsive steering and is nimble around corners, and added that it has a serene ride quality. Several reviewers noted that the regenerative brakes feel overly sensitive, which is a common complain among hybrids.

Reviewers agreed that the 2012 Cayenne Hybrid’s cabin is impeccably designed with first-rate materials and construction. The front seats are spacious and supportive, though some critics reported that the seats, though spacious, are a bit too hard for optimum comfort on longer trips. At 59.7 cubic feet, the Cayenne Hybrid's cargo space is slightly less than in gas-only Cayenne models and is low for the class. The 2012 Cayenne Hybrid comes standard with a sunroof, a power liftgate, dual-zone automatic climate control, power front seats with memory, leather seats, Bluetooth and a 10-speaker CD audio system with an auxiliary input and touch-screen display. Available features include a rearview camera, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated and power-adjustable steering wheel, navigation, an upgraded audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, a USB port, lane change assist, adaptive cruise control, four-zone climate control and a rear-seat DVD system. Test drivers said the vast number of buttons on the dashboard can be overwhelming at first and added and that the touch-screen interface for audio and navigation controls can be complicated, as it requires scrolling through multiple menus.

Other SUVs to Consider

The 2012 Lexus RX Hybrid gets much better fuel economy than the Cayenne Hybrid and has a lot more overall cargo space. Test drivers said its regenerative brakes are smooth and they liked its tranquil cabin.

The 2012 BMW X5 is available in a fuel-efficient diesel model that gets better fuel economy than the Cayenne Hybrid. Reviewers said the X5 handles athletically while offering a comfortable, composed ride. It also is available with a third row of seating and has more cargo space than the Cayenne Hybrid.
