2018 Porsche Boxster Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2018 Porsche Boxster was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.6

The 2018 Porsche Boxster leaves little to complain about on the inside. The cabin is sleek, and there are soft-touch materials everywhere. The seats are roomy and supportive, and the two trunks provide a good amount of space as long as you don’t need to transport large items. The Boxster may not have the longest features list in the class, but it provides some high-end, user-friendly technology.

  • "The instrumentation is simple and the large tachometer is front and center exactly where it should be. Nothing is out of place and everything looks and feels expensive. The key is to the left of the steering wheel, a Porsche tradition, and there's an abundance of aluminum trim and soft leather." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Inside, the car is new but familiar. There's a 7.0-inch touchscreen standard as part of Porsche Communication Management. Navigation, Apple CarPlay and a Wi-Fi hotspot are optional." -- Car and Driver (2017)
  • "718 S has the highest quality interior ever in a Boxster, and I'd argue the best exterior design in the model's 20-year history." -- Forbes (2017)

Seating

The Porsche Boxster seats two and comes standard with partial leather upholstery. Full leather seats, 14- or 18-way power-adjustable seats, and heated and ventilated seats are available.

The Boxster sits low, which makes it feel like you’re in the cockpit of a jet. Still, the cabin is spacious and there’s plenty of head- and legroom. The seats are supportive, and the driving position is excellent. There are no LATCH child-seat connectors, which is the case in most two-seat vehicles.

  • "The sport seats are supportive, split by a narrow armrest and jet-like transmission tunnel …" -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The interior feels special because you sit so low, enveloped. It is also sensible in that typical Porsche way, with no over-the-top luxury elements." -- Forbes (2017)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Boxster include a 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, Bluetooth, a six-speaker sound system, satellite radio, HD Radio, automatic climate control, and a power-folding soft top.

Optional features include dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, Apple CarPlay, a Wi-Fi hot spot, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with brake assist, satellite navigation, a 10-speaker Bose surround-sound system, and a 12-speaker Burmester sound system.

The Boxster’s convertible top can be raised and lowered efficiently while driving at lower speeds. The infotainment system has an intuitive interface, and the touch screen’s graphics are sharp. The Boxster has Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity, but unlike some rivals, it doesn’t offer Android Auto.

  • "Despite using a carryover soft top from the outgoing car, the Boxster still provides an efficient and practical lid." -- Car and Driver (2017)
  • "The latest-gen Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment is quick and even easier to use thanks to a swipeable touchscreen. Opt for navigation and you’ll get a quick system guided by a friendly female voice." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "Porsche’s Communication Management system continues to improve. The 7-inch touchscreen could be quicker, but it includes Apple CarPlay, and the navigation system incorporates Google Earth mapping. There’s even an app showing journey statistics, car and servicing status, and both geo and speed fencing. All the better to keep Darling Daughter and Precious Son out of your roadster." -- CNET (2017)

Cargo

The Porsche Boxster is a midengine car. As a result, it has two trunks. The rear trunk has 4.4 cubic feet of space, while the front trunk (or “frunk”) has 5.3 cubic feet of space. That’s a good amount of total space for a roadster, but you still can’t really carry any large items.

  • If you don't have the seats moved all the way back you can also throw a jacket or small bag behind them. Thankfully there is both a small rear bay and a front trunk." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
