2012 Porsche Boxster Overview

The 2012 Porsche Boxster comes standard with a six-cylinder engine that reviewers said should provide plenty of power for most buyers. However, some preferred the more powerful Boxster S, noting that it delivers noticeably stronger acceleration and a beautiful exhaust note. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, though a seven-speed automated manual (PDK) is available. Reviewers said the PDK transmission is superb and delivers flawless gear changes. According to the EPA, the 2012 Porsche Boxster and Boxster S get up to 20/29 mpg city/highway, which is good for the class. Test drivers agreed that the Boxster and Boxster S have outstanding handling, with exceptional steering feel and immense braking power. Reviewers added that the Boxster Spyder’s handling is even more stunning, but caution that its ride is much harsher than that of the base and S models.

Automotive journalists said the 2012 Boxster has a driver-oriented cabin with large gauges and premium interior materials. The Porsche Boxster seats two people, and reviewers reported that its seats are comfortable, with adequate space for most. Still, some said that taller people may feel more cramped than they would in rival cars like the BMW Z4. Critics also noted that wind and road noise can be an issue, particularly at highway speeds. They added that the base audio system has poor sound quality, and recommended the upgraded sound system. Reviewers said the 2012 Boxster’s cargo space is decent for a roadster, despite the fact that it’s split between a front and rear trunk. The 2012 Porsche Boxster’s standard features include a four-speaker stereo, Bluetooth and an iPod interface. Available features include satellite radio, heated and ventilated seats, automatic climate control, a Bose sound system and navigation.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2012 BMW Z4 comes with a power-retractable hardtop, and test drivers praised its strong brakes and controlled handling. The base Z4 also gets great fuel economy for the class, and reviewers were wowed by its lively acceleration.

If you love the Boxster and you’re considering a hardtop, check out the 2012 Porsche Cayman. Reviewers agreed that the Cayman also offers dynamic handling and a luxurious, well-made interior.
