2015 Porsche 911 Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2015 Porsche 911 was new.

Performance: 9.2

Critics say the 2015 Porsche 911 is one of the most exhilarating, agile sports cars you can drive, and thanks to its smooth ride, it's also a comfortable choice for a daily commute.

  • "Everything about driving the Porsche 911 makes you feel like a rock star. No matter how you equip it, the car is an absolute thrill to drive with its aggressive power delivery and ultratight handling." -- AutoTrader
  • "The characterful and idiosyncratic rear-engine, boxer six-cylinder formula has remained an unvarying constant, but acceleration, handling, fuel efficiency and driver comfort have all reached impressive new heights in the latest series, known internally by the 991 codename." -- Left Lane News
  • "In sum, you're just not going to find a sports car that better combines civility, performance and variety." -- Edmunds
  • "'A supercar you can drive every day.' It's a description applicable to more and more modern supercars, but the 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo delivers what is arguably the finest balance between paradigm-shifting performance and on-road civility." -- Kelley Blue Book (2014)

Acceleration and Power

The 2015 Porsche 911 Carrera is powered by a 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine that produces 350 horsepower and 287 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed manual transmission is standard and a seven-speed automated manual (PDK) transmission is optional. According to the EPA, the 911 Carrera gets 20/28 mpg city/highway with the automated manual transmission, which is on par for the class. The 911 S model features a 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine that generates 400 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. The new GTS model has a 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine that makes 430 horsepower and 324.5 pound-feet of torque.

The Porsche 911 GT3 comes with a 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine that generates 475 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. The top-of-the-line Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S models feature twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter six-cylinder engines that produce 520 and 560 horsepower, respectively. The Turbo S accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds and has a top speed of 197 mph.

Though automotive journalists say you have to rev the base engine fairly high to get the most from it, they note that it sounds great and offers plenty of power. Critics write that the S and GTS models offer a noticeable improvement in power, and the top-of-the-line Turbo S is one of the fastest cars Porsche has ever built. Some reviewers report that it's too easy to select the wrong gear when using the 911's seven-speed manual transmission. However, most say the automated manual is a delight to use thanks to its rapid gear changes.

  • "The right engine for your 2015 Porsche 911 is a matter of personal taste, as there's not a bad apple in this barrel. Although the base 3.4-liter flat-6 doesn't really wake up till you get past 4,000 rpm, exploiting that peaky power band is gratifying in its own right, and the noises are pure Porsche magic. If you want more midrange punch, the S- and GTS-spec 3.8-liter engine provides a palpable upgrade without sacrificing any high-rpm thrills." -- Edmunds
  • "Simply put, the 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo S is the fastest-accelerating road-going series production 911 we've ever driven -- faster than the latest 911 GT3, faster than the manic 911 GT2 RS and faster even than the homologation version of the 1998 Le Mans-winning 911 GT1. In fact, the new 911 Turbo S is the fastest-accelerating road car Porsche has ever placed into open-ended production, full stop." -- AutoWeek (2014)
  • "The car runs plenty strong with the 'base' Carrera engine's 350 horsepower, but for even more, you can choose 400 (Carrera S), 520 (Turbo), or 560 (Turbo S). The 911's industry-first 7-speed manual gearbox (not available on Turbo models) works beautifully but we prefer Porsche's spectacular twin-clutch PDK automatic transmission, which bangs off gear changes with a press of wheel-mounted rocker switches." -- Kelley Blue Book (2014)
  • "The seven-speed manual's gates are closely spaced, and it's easy to select the wrong gear, particularly while pulling the lever back for upshifts." -- Car and Driver (2013)

Handling and Braking

The 2015 Porsche 911 comes standard with rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is standard on "4" models and Turbo models. Reviewers write that the 911 is one of the best-handling sports cars on the market, offering stunning agility and incredibly accurate, responsive steering. They also say it has powerful brakes that are easy to control, and a composed ride that makes it a good choice for commuting.

  • "Steering is also among the most direct that we've ever experienced, despite Porsche's inclusion of an electrically assisted steering system." -- AutoTrader
  • "Despite its performance capabilities, the 911 has a reasonably compliant ride that won't beat up drivers who use the car for their daily commute." -- Left Lane News
  • "The steering is quick and precise, and overall the 911 gives you a nearly unparalleled sense of control and engagement. It works better the harder you drive it. Even the Turbo, with its extensive amount of chassis and powertrain technology, feels alive. Turn into a corner and the Turbo's nose just digs in, bites down and yanks the car toward the apex, then hurls you out the other side with freakish efficiency." -- Edmunds
  • "The Porsche 911 is legendary for its razor-sharp steering and handling, and the redesigned models are no exception." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "The car comes standard with six piston brakes up front and four piston brakes on the rear wheels. The stopping power is truly excellent, as modulating the brakes let me precisely slow the car depending on the upcoming turn." -- CNET (2012)
