2009 Pontiac Torrent Overview

When it was new, most reviewers agreed that the 2009 Pontiac Torrent is a mediocre SUV. The 2009 Pontiac Torrent has adequate power, but many reviewers thought that its ride was rough and noisy, and its steering was numb and unresponsive. The Torrent lagged behind competitors in both performance and fuel economy. Test drivers felt that performance-minded shoppers would prefer the GXP Torrent, which has a sport-tuned suspension for sportier handling and a more-powerful engine. The Torrent’s safety ratings are below the class average.

One selling point for the Torrent is its spacious interior. Reviewers said the Torrent’s seats are comfortable and supportive, with plenty of head- and legroom. The rear seats recline and slide forward and backward, increasing either cargo space or legroom. Still, when it was new, reviewers disliked the Torrent’s interior quality, saying trims and finishes were cheap-looking. For the most part, test drivers liked the Torrent’s controls, but some didn’t like the window switches being on the center console. The Torrent has ample cargo space.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re considering the Torrent, the highly-ranked 2009 Chevrolet Equinox is a much better alternative. Even though they are based on the same platform, the Equinox offers better performance and interior quality. Both vehicles have comparable safety scores, cargo room and fuel economy.

The 2009 Toyota RAV4 offers better safety ratings, along with better fuel economy than the Torrent. When it was new, critics praised the RAV4 for offering more power than most competitors and for its refined driving feel and spacious interior. The RAV4 also has an available third row.
