2021 Polestar 2 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.0

The 2021 Polestar 2 has a handsome cabin, impressive technology, and admirable seating and cargo accommodations.

  • "The 2's interior brings together wood, fabric, and plastic in a simple yet artful way. It looks modern, with clean lines, a spartan color palette, and minimal switchgear. The 2 borrows a couple things from its Volvo brethren, like the steering-wheel buttons and knurled start knob, but the overall design reads less busy here." -- Car and Driver
  • "Volvo always has done interiors well, and the Polestar 2, with top-quality materials, is no exception." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "As standard, the Polestar gets a vegan interior. And rather nice it is, too. It'll be interesting to see how well it fares with use over time, but straight out of the box the textures of the textiles are tactile and warm." -- CNET

Cargo

The Polestar 2 has 14.3 cubic feet of storage space behind its rear seats, which is typical for a car of its size but is a little below average for the luxury hybrid and electric car class. With the second row folded down, there's 38.7 cubic feet. The Polestar 2 also has a small front trunk that measures 1.2 cubic feet. A hands-free power liftgate is standard.

  • "They will also appreciate its hatchback – opening more useful cargo space than the Model 3’s standard trunk (the Polestar shares a platform with the Volvo VC40 SUV)." -- Detroit News
  • "As a hatchback design, the Polestar 2 benefits from the 60/40-split back seat that folds forward to increase cargo capacity. Note: The Polestar has a front trunk as well, but it’s a small one with less than 2 cubic feet of room." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The power-operated liftgate opens to a not-so-cavernous cargo hold boasting 14 cubic feet of space. Need more? There's another cubic foot of storage in the frunk." -- Car and Driver

Seating

The Polestar 2 seats five people with enough space for taller riders in both the front and back rows. However, some people might take issue with the height and positioning of the driver's seat.

Cloth upholstery, power-adjustable and heated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and driver's seat memory settings are standard. Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and gold seat belts are optional.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats.

  • "The front and rear seats offer expected Swedish levels of comfort, thanks in part to Polestar's decision not to use a uniform flat battery pack. Instead, cells are stacked high along the center hump and under the seats, with none beneath the footwells, which then preserves comfy seating positions." -- Motor Trend
  • "My only real gripe was the seating position. Polestar worked hard to disguise the thickness of the under-floor battery pack, a challenge to any company attempting to make a svelte-looking EV. The Polestar 2's overall shape mostly hides the platform's portliness, but from the driver's seat you feel unusually high off the ground. That fact isn't helped by ergonomics that seem designed for someone with long arms but rather shorter legs." -- Road and Track
  • "The cabin is decently roomy, too. Four six-footers can ride comfortably." -- Car and Driver

Interior Features

The Polestar 2 comes standard with an 11.2-inch touch-screen infotainment system that's user-friendly despite its high-tech looks. Controls are straightforward, and the underlying Google and Android Software works smoothly.

Other standard features include a 13-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, four USB ports, wireless device charging, navigation, voice recognition, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, a universal garage door opener, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a panoramic glass roof.

The Polestar 2 also comes with a long list of active safety features, including Pilot Assist, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, forward and reverse automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, a surround-view parking camera system, front- and rearview cameras, front and rear parking sensors, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

  • "The Polestar 2's overall experience is pleasant -- and customizable, thanks in no small part to the Android Auto Operating System. More than connecting your smartphone to the infotainment system, the system itself works as seamlessly as your smartphone. The user experience is impressive, especially considering this is Google’s first try. For example, it’s simple to go through a menu of driver assist features, like adaptive cruise control and turn them off or on." -- Autoweek
  • "There are still physical buttons for things that you might need in a rush, like the hazard warning lights and windscreen demisting. There is a volume control knob too, which is handy. But the screen itself is simple and intuitively arranged so that you can merely glance at it and get what you need." -- CNET
  • "Polestar is the first to use Android OS in a car. Forget screen-mirroring your phone with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Polestar’s Android system is the real deal — a smartphone on wheels like Tesla." -- Detroit News
