Buying Advice

Last Updated: April 16, 2020

Plunging Sales: The Sentra currently places in the upper third in compact car sales in 2020. However, so far this year sales have nosedived by 58 percent relative to the same span in 2019.

Below Average Pricing: In a segment with highly-competitive prices, a base Sentra starts about $2,200 below the class average for entry-level trims. A top-trim Sentra starts even further below the segment average for fully-loaded rivals. Upper trims of the Corolla and Honda Civic both start several thousand dollars higher than the Sentra.

Time to Buy: Now’s a good time to shop for a new Sentra, since dealerships will likely negotiate to boost sales. However, since the Sentra ranks poorly among compact cars, we suggest shopping around before making a final decision. The Kia Forte both costs less and ranks higher than the Sentra. It also won our 2020 Best Compact Car for the Money award, so you can be sure it’s a great value. If you’re set on the Sentra, consider a 2019 model since the 2020 model was completely redesigned; dealerships will likely be willing to sell the outgoing model for a discount to make space on their lots for the latest inventory. Be sure to check out available Kia and Nissan deals for the best finance and lease incentives.  When you’re ready to buy, use the U.S. News Best Price Program to find the dealership in your area with the lowest price. Many dealerships are offering remote buying services to combat the spread of Coronavirus. Contact your local dealer directly for details.
