2016 Nissan Sentra Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 Nissan Sentra was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.0

Critics say the refreshed 2016 Nissan Sentra's interior has simple and refined styling, very good materials, and a larger back seat and trunk than most rivals. The cabin is also quieter than many competitors’ thanks to newly introduced sound insulation. However, there are some criticisms. The available touch screen could be bigger. The front seats, while comfortable on long-distance trips, could use more lateral support.

  • "Although the Sentra's conservative overall interior design isn't going to wow you, the cabin gives the impression of being well-made overall." -- Edmunds
  • "[T]he simple, pleasing design of the Sentra's cabin are rendered in upscale materials seemingly pulled from the Altima." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "High-quality materials, electroluminescent gauges and a tasteful, contoured design help create what is arguably the finest interior in all of Compactsedanland." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "[T]he Sentra's interior is a nice place to spend some time. The materials are top-notch for the class, and the design, like the exterior, is clean, if inoffensive." -- Motor Trend (2013)

Seating

The 2016 Nissan Sentra seats five and comes standard with cloth upholstery. Available features include leather upholstery and heated front seats. A power-adjustable driver's seat is a new option for the 2016 model year.

The Sentra's front seats are comfortable, though they could use more supportive cushions on the sides. The rear seat is more spacious than that of most compact cars, so tall passengers should have plenty of room. The Sentra received updated sound insulation for the 2016 model year, and now it's one of the quieter cars in its class.

  • "Taller passengers will love sitting in the Sentra. Both its front and rear seats are class-leading when it comes to space. In fact, the rear accommodations are so spacious that the Sentra practically feels like a midsize sedan from the backseat." -- Edmunds
  • "Even better, the use of an acoustically insulated windshield and lots of added padding in the firewall and doors makes the 2016 Sentra remarkably quiet compared to other cars in its class." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "With more interior room than a Dodge Dart and more rear-seat legroom than the Ford Focus, the Sentra offers superior comfort for all its occupants while keeping its exterior dimensions tidy and manageable." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • The seats are comfortable, but lack even the slightest hint of lateral support." -- Car and Driver (2013)
  • Our predilection would be for a set of front seats with larger side bolsters than these very flat Sentra seats offered, though we must admit that the cushions felt nicely padded for long-range cruising." -- Autoblog (2013)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2016 Nissan Sentra include automatic headlights, a four-speaker stereo, a USB port, cruise control, remote keyless entry, and Bluetooth phone connectivity.

Available features include a moonroof, proximity keys, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a rearview camera.

There are two optional NissanConnect infotainment systems. One comes with a 5-inch display, while the other has a 5.8-inch touch screen, navigation, and hands-free text messaging. Both come with satellite radio, six speakers, Bluetooth audio connectivity, smartphone app integration, Siri Eyes Free voice-activated iPhone integration, and a 5-inch color display in the gauge cluster.

The Sentra has several new advanced safety and driver assistance options for the 2016 model year, including adaptive cruise control, automatic pre-collision braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.

The Nissan Sentra's smartphone integration features, which include Siri Eyes Free and Google search functionality, are quite useful, and the 5-inch color screen in the gauge cluster provides plenty of practical information. However, it'd be nice if the 5.8-inch touch screen were larger. Many competitors have 7-inch touch screens.

  • "Standout features include smartphone-app integration via NissanConnect, which allows you to do Google searches via the car's 5.8-inch touchscreen interface in navigation-equipped models. SV and higher trims offer Siri Eyes Free voice recognition, which allows iPhone users to utilize any Siri function via a button on the steering wheel. In Sentras without navigation, you can still stream Internet radio (Pandora or iHeartRadio) and monitor text messages and social media." -- Edmunds
  • That 5.8-inch screen is as big as it gets in the Sentra (instead of competitors' 7-inch screens), and the CD player slot's placement above the screen instead of below or behind it makes the center stack look a bit dated. The Sentra wins back a few points with Apple Siri Eyes Free that can, among other functions, send text messages with voice commands and can read them aloud and display them, too. Then there's the well-designed instrument cluster's central 5-inch color info display that's standard on all but the base S trim and can show lots of useful information." -- Motor Trend
  • "I was not terribly impressed with the navigation system's small touch screen or maps." -- CNET (2013)

Cargo

The 2016 Nissan Sentra has 15.1 cubic feet of trunk space. This is very good for a compact car and comparable to that of some midsize sedans. A 60/40 split-folding rear seat is standard.

  • "Luggage capacity is generous for the class. At 15.1 cubic feet, the Sentra's trunk volume is comparable to that of some midsize sedans." -- Edmunds
  • "The Nissan Sentra sedan is roomy enough, in fact, that it's one of a handful of compact sedans classified as midsize by the EPA." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
