2014 Nissan Sentra Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2014 Nissan Sentra was new.

Interior: 7.4

The 2014 Nissan Sentra’s cabin feels upscale and is well-constructed with quality materials, many of which are soft to the touch, according to critics. Front seats are sufficiently comfortable though very flat, reviewers say, adding that they lack headroom, especially in models with a moonroof. Test drivers agree that the back seat is spacious with ample legroom, with some saying it’s one of the largest rear seats in the class. Dashboard controls are well-placed, auto writers note, and the optional infotainment and navigation systems are a snap to program and pair with a smartphone. A few critics comment that the sound quality in the base stereo is merely average, and reviews of the premium Bose system range from good to so-so. Cargo room is excellent for the class, rivaling the space available in some midsize cars.

  • "The similarities continue inside, where the simple, pleasing design of the Sentra's cabin are rendered in upscale materials seemingly pulled from the Altima." -- Left Lane News
  • "Fit and finish throughout the cabin is excellent, and the SL trim, in particular, stands out with its generous use of soft-touch materials and wood-tone accents; its available leather upholstery, with its handsome stitching, is especially appealing." -- Edmunds (2013)
  • "Like the exterior, the interior boasts some nice features. The armrest is like a pillow stolen from a Four Points Sheraton, and use of plastic is relatively minimal. The center console is adequately laid out, and the steering wheel is functional and pleasing to touch." -- Jalopnik (2013)

The Sentra comes with a steering wheel that tilts and telescopes. Optional upgrades include leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Reviewers report that the Sentra’s front seats are spacious. They say it should be easy for most drivers to find a comfy position, though a few say the seat bottoms are very flat. The back seat is sizable and there’s plenty of legroom, test drivers note, with some saying it’s one of the roomiest in the class.

  • "Taller drivers will welcome the new Sentra's standard tilt-and-telescoping steering column, while all adults should be pleased by the unexpectedly spacious front seats. Rear-seat passengers aren't left out either, since they have nearly 3 more inches of legroom than before, making the Sentra one of the most spacious cars in its class." -- Edmunds (2013)
  • "The seat bottom cushions are pretty thin and wear you out on longer trips, though the backrests are comfortable. There's also the matter of the front passenger seat, which is not height-adjustable and sits very high, making it feel like your head's in the ceiling." -- Motor Trend (2013)
  • "The Sentra's cabin is spacious and the controls are nicely arranged, to the point that getting comfortable behind the wheel took only a matter of seconds." -- Road and Track (2013)

Interior Features

The base 2014 Sentra comes with a four-speaker CD audio system and an audio input jack. Available options include an eight-speaker Bose audio system, a USB/iPod interface, Bluetooth with audio streaming, satellite radio, a 5.8-inch touch-screen navigation system, a rearview camera, a power moonroof, push-button start, hands-free text messaging and NissanConnect, which links the car’s infotainment system with smartphone apps like Facebook and Pandora Internet radio.

Reviewers say the Sentra’s dashboard controls are well-placed and that programming the navigation system is a simple affair. It’s easy to link a smartphone with the optional infotainment system, they add, and they like that available functions like Google search and Pandora Internet radio connect quickly and seamlessly. Several test drivers say the standard audio system offers forgettable sound. There are mixed reviews on the premium Bose audio system, with one saying it offers good sound quality and another saying that the systems in rival cars are better.

  • “Ergonomics are solid, with all the controls logically laid out and easy to reach. That praise extends to the optional NissanConnect navigation system, which is intuitive and easy to use. Nissan's done a commendable job of simplifying the functions, making things like inputting an address or connecting a phone via Bluetooth quick and easy." -- Motor Trend (2013)
  • "The Google local search capability was particularly impressive, especially as it did not rely on a smartphone's data connection. Pandora integration also worked very well. I was not terribly impressed with the navigation system's small touch screen or maps." -- CNET (2013)
  • "As standard, the audio quality makes you feel rather apathetic. But opt for the Bose Premium Audio System and life gets far more interesting. 8-speakers are placed throughout the car and a unique amplifier is tuned for either cloth or leather seats, preventing unwanted distortion." -- Jalopnik (2013)
  • "The premium sound system comes coupled with a sunroof as part of the Premium package and isn't the best we've heard." -- Edmunds (2013)

The Nissan Sentra has 15.1 cubic feet of trunk space, which is excellent for a small car and rivals the space found in some midsize cars. However, several reviewers say that there isn’t enough interior storage for small items.

  • "The Sentra also takes after the Altima in size, being one of the larger sedans in its segment in terms of legroom and trunk space, with the latter measuring a midsize-like 15.3 cubic inches." -- Left Lane News
  • "One area where the Sentra could use an upgrade is interior storage. The center console is tiny and there's no bin in front of the transmission shifter either. There are two average-size cupholders between the seats and some decent door pockets, but neither is a good place for loose change." -- Edmunds (2013)
  • "... the storage bins are tiny, and there is no place to put your phone." -- Jalopnik (2013)
