2014 Nissan Sentra Overview

Is the 2014 Nissan Sentra a Good Used Car?

The Sentra is a good used car. Its interior is upscale, offering roomy front and rear seats for the class. The interior controls are easy to use, with an intuitive layout. Many rivals offer better performance and more active safety equipment. Still, the Sentra has good fuel economy.

Used 2014 Nissan Sentra Performance and Interior

All Sentras come with a four-cylinder engine that produces 130 horsepower. It’s underpowered for highway passing and merging. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, but it has rough gear changes and a gearshift that feels cheaply made. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is available in the base trim and standard with higher trim levels. CVT-equipped models achieve the best fuel economy of the Sentra lineup, at 30 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. The Sentra has a firm ride, but it has no problem soaking up most road imperfections. Its handling ability lacks excitement compared to others in the class.

The 2014 Nissan Sentra seats five. The cabin has an upscale look, helped in part by quality, soft-touch materials and good construction. The front seats are comfortable, and the rear seats have an abundance of legroom for the compact car segment. Taller drivers might find front headroom lacking, especially in models equipped with the available moonroof. The Sentra has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for child safety seats in the rear outward sets. There is also a middle-seat tether.

The Sentra has few standard features beyond a four-speaker audio system with a CD player and an auxiliary jack. Some models have an upgraded audio system, Bluetooth, satellite radio, a 5.8-inch touch-screen navigation system, push-button start, and hands-free text messaging. Another available upgrade is NissanConnect, which links the infotainment system with various smartphone apps. Overall, the infotainment system and dashboard controls are easy to use.

Should I Consider Another Used Sentra?

The 2014 Nissan Sentra is part of the compact sedan’s seventh generation, which launched with the 2013 model year. Changes for 2014 include improvements to the steering system, noise reduction, and ride control. If these changes are not important to you, save your money and go with a 2013 Sentra. The 2015 Sentra will probably cost more than a 2014 model, but it gives you standard equipment like a USB port, Bluetooth, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, automatic headlights, and cruise control. It may be worth spending the extra money if you want these features.

Which Used Nissan Sentra Is Right for Me?

The four-door Sentra comes in six trims: S, FE+ S, SV, FE+ SV, SR, and SL. The base S trim includes features like air conditioning, a four-speaker audio system, and LED taillights. The Nissan Sentra SV adds a standard CVT, a six-speaker audio system, and a vehicle security system. The SR adds sport enhancements, fog lights, and premium cloth seats. The top-level SL trim comes with smart automatic headlights, keyless entry, push-button ignition, a 4.3-inch display, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The FE+ trims add a rear spoiler and aerodynamic body enhancements. However, there appears to be no fuel economy benefits to the FE+ over other trim levels, according to the EPA. The Nissan Sentra SL is the best choice for its list of equipment.

Even with its average reliability rating, you might want to consider a certified pre-owned Sentra. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Nissan extends the original new-car warranty to seven years or 100,000 miles. To become certified pre-owned, each vehicle must pass a 167-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Nissan warranty page carefully.

2014 Nissan Sentra and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Nissan Sentra or 2014 Ford Focus?

The 2014 Ford Focus offers responsive handling and a comfortable ride, which contrasts with the Sentra’s boring road manners and firm ride. The Ford has a nicer interior than the Nissan, but the Focus’ technology is more difficult to use. The Focus has a reliability rating of two out of five (the lowest possible score), which makes it difficult to recommend over the Sentra.

Which Is Better: 2014 Nissan Sentra or 2014 Toyota Corolla?

The 2014 Toyota Corolla outperforms few cars, but the Sentra is one of them. The Corolla has a comfortable ride and your choice of either an engaging six-speed manual transmission or an available automatic transmission with a sport mode that makes driving more fun. The Corolla also has much more rear legroom than the Sentra. The Corolla is the clear choice in this comparison.
