2019 Nissan Rogue Sport Performance Review

Scorecard

Performance: 6.4

With its focus on comfort over athleticism, the 2019 Nissan Rogue Sport doesn't live up to its name. While this Nissan has compliant handling, there is minimal steering feedback. Additionally, its engine has only adequate power at low and moderate speeds and is underpowered on the highway. One performance-related highlight is the continuously variable transmission, which mimics the shifts of a traditional automatic transmission.

  • Having recently whipped the Rogue Sport around the track at the Circuit of the Americas near Austin, Texas, we can tell you it handles better at speed than you might expect. In the turns, it's relatively stable for a CUV." -- Autotrader
  • Acceleration isn't stunning, considering that 141 horsepower has to haul around 3,225 to 3,380 pounds of Rogue Sport, depending on model. But aside from passing on the freeway the drivetrain showed little resistance to the usual duties of getting around town. At freeway speeds noise levels were nicely controlled as well, allowing easy conversation." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • Around turns, it is stable but does little to inspire driver enthusiasm." -- Edmunds (2018)

Acceleration and Power

The Rogue Sport comes with a weak 141-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. With it, the Rogue Sport is slow to accelerate and struggles to pass vehicles at high speeds. It's paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that doesn't contribute to a loud engine drone like many CVTs do.

The front-wheel-drive Rogue Sport delivers 25 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, which is about average for the class. All-wheel-drive models get 1 less mpg in the city and 2 less mpg on the highway.

  • "Don't expect a sporty driving experience with the incongruously named Rogue Sport. This is one of the slowest vehicles in its class." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • Its powertrain is better engineered for short sprints between traffic lights than half-mile gallops while merging onto a freeway or getting around slower traffic on a 2-lane country road." -- Autotrader (2018)
  • The little engine delivers decent power, and even though it's not what we'd call quick, pretty much everything in this class suffers from the same complaint." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)

Handling and Braking

The Rogue Sport delivers a comfortable ride and composed handling, but it doesn't live up to its name. It is by no means sporty, and critics lament its heavy steering. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

  • "We've driven the Rogue Sport on country roads, city streets and freeways. Because it targets urban and suburban drivers, it shines when slugging its way through crowded city streets." -- Autotrader
  • "There's little joy in this vague and lifeless steering even if it is a bit tighter than the standard Rogue. The steering weight is on the heavy side with a slow return to center and an artificial feel. Plus, the flat-bottom steering wheel is a strange choice in a subcompact crossover." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "The Rogue Sport benefits from its bigger sibling by feeling more substantial than many competitors, without feeling bulky." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
