Note: This performance review was created when the 2018 Nissan Murano was new.
Performance: | 7.9 |
The 2018 Nissan Murano may not be the most thrilling SUV to drive, but its excellent fuel economy, adequate engine power, and smooth, composed handling make it a great commuter car. Still, cornering too quickly will show that this SUV is not as sporty as many rivals.
A 260-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) powers the 2018 Murano. This Nissan gets EPA estimates of up to 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, which is exceptional for the class.
This isn't an SUV that'll throw you back in your seat when you accelerate, but the V6 has plenty of power for most driving situations. The CVT is one of the better CVTs on the market and is usually unnoticeable as it transfers the engine's power to the wheels. Under heavy acceleration, however, it can become rather noisy.
The Murano's ride is stable when making turns at normal speeds, but it's less composed when cornering quickly. The power steering is not very precise, and there's little feedback through the wheel. A wide turning radius can make maneuvering in tight spaces challenging. Still, the Murano offers a comfortable ride, unless it's equipped with the optional 20-inch wheels, which make the ride bouncier. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional.
