Pros & Cons

  • Upscale, roomy cabin
  • Poor rear visibility
  • Unimpressive safety scores

New for 2011

  • SV trim and convertible Murano CrossCabriolet were added to the lineup

2011 Nissan Murano Overview

In 2011, reviewers said that the Murano was a powerful and fun-to-drive family crossover. But what really impressed them was the Murano’s interior. Some test drivers even compared this Nissan favorably with its luxury sister brand, Infiniti. Plus, unlike many SUVs, the Murano’s fuel economy is the same in both front- and all-wheel drive models, according to the EPA.

The big news for 2011 was the addition of the convertible Murano CrossCabriolet to the lineup. This convertible crossover is the only one of its kind, and reviewers weren’t sure what to make of it. It comes in one near-luxury trim, has seating for four and a soft-top convertible roof. When it was new, the Murano CrossCabriolet cost a lot more than most other trim levels, and many reviewers said it wasn’t very attractive. Testers couldn’t agree whether the convertible Murano was fun to drive or not, but as the only vehicle of its kind, it could be worth a look.

The 2011 Nissan Murano has a 3.5-liter V6 engine and is available in five trim levels: S, SV, SL, LE and CrossCabriolet. All have either front- or all-wheel drive, except the CrossCabriolet, which comes standard with all-wheel drive. The base S trim comes with standard features including dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start and a stereo with a six-disc CD changer and an auxiliary audio jack. SL, LE and CrossCabriolet trims are outfitted almost like luxury SUVs, with a heated steering wheel, a Bose sound system and leather upholstery.

Other Cars to Consider

For another five-seat SUV with an upscale interior, consider the 2011 Ford Edge. Like the Murano, reviewers wrote that the Edge’s interior could be equipped to rival its luxury sibling, the 2011 Lincoln MKX. For 2011, the Edge gained options like the high-tech MyFord Touch infotainment system. The Ford Edge also gets better fuel economy than the Nissan Murano in most trims and both SUVs are a close match in terms safety.

The 2011 Toyota Venza is another five-seat crossover to consider. It offers more room for passengers and cargo than many other similarly-sized SUVs, and the Venza also beats the Murano with better safety scores. Test drivers appreciated its well-made interior, though nearly all said it wasn’t as fun to drive as the Murano. Still, the Venza’s long list of standard features, upscale cabin and smooth ride make it a great pick in its class.
