2019 Nissan Kicks Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.9

The 2019 Nissan Kicks has a quiet, comfortable interior, though its material quality receives mixed reviews. Some critics think there are too many hard plastics in the Kicks, while others find the cabin nice for this price point. Cargo space is impressive, and passenger room is decent, even in the back.

  • Although we drove a top-line SR with Premium Package, even this model isn't awash with high-end interior materials. The dash face was padded (not so in lower-line models), as were the door armrests and fold-down center armrests, but the dash top and door tops were hard plastic. That's not to say the interior looked cheap, but it was clear there was some cost-cutting going on there." -- Consumer Guide (2018)
  • The rest of the interior is what you'd expect for a sub-$23,000 car. It's all plastic, unless you get an SR with its nice stitched faux-leather wrap on the dash. The quality of the plastic is fine, as is fit and finish." -- Motor Trend (2018)
  • "The interior is quiet and comfortable. It's also surprisingly upscale with quality materials throughout, which is impressive considering this crossover starts at $17,990 for the base S trim." -- Boston Globe (2018)

Seating

The Kicks seats five people on standard cloth upholstery. Sport seats, synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob are available. There’s plenty of room in both rows, and two adults can fit in the back without much trouble.

For installing child safety seats, there are two sets of LATCH connectors on the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor on the rear middle seat. The setup is easy to use.

  • "The 5-passenger Kicks has a comfortable and roomy interior. As with other vehicles in Nissan’s lineup, the Kicks is fitted with NASA-inspired 'zero-gravity' seats that are comfortable. The Kicks also has a built-in armrest on the right-hand side of the driver’s seat, a rarity in vehicles at this affordable price-point." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "What's best about the interior, however, is that it's a very usable and roomy space for a car this small. Back-seat passengers won't be stretching out much, but they won't feel as if they should gnaw off their legs at the knees, either. It's a surprisingly efficient cabin for four, but don't push it beyond that." -- Car and Driver (2018)
  • "The Kicks is roomy with space for your stuff and your friends. Front seat headroom and legroom are generous and the back seat will seat two adults comfortably–three in a pinch. It's pretty quiet inside too." -- New York Daily News (2018)

Interior Features

The base Kicks S is outfitted with push-button start, a 7-inch touch screen, Siri Eyes Free, three USB ports, a six-speaker stereo, and Bluetooth. A few safety features come standard too – a rearview camera, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking.

Optional equipment includes the NissanConnect infotainment system, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a Wi-Fi hot spot, an eight-speaker Bose stereo, remote start, proximity keyless entry, and automatic climate control. Available safety features include a surround-view parking camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and rear parking sensors.

Navigating through the touch-screen menus is simple, and there are physical controls placed in a logical manner for easy access.

  • "The infotainment layout is a bit more streamlined, with a customizable home screen and menus that are easier to navigate. With smartphone mirroring, the system is much more user-friendly than in other Nissans I've driven." -- CNET (2018)
  • On the positive side, audio and climate controls are fairly straightforward and easy to reach, and visibility is only restricted to the rear corners due to wide roof pillars, making us appreciate the SR's 360-degree camera when backing." -- Consumer Guide (2018)
  • "Let's take a moment to talk about this stereo. You're lucky if you can even get a 'premium' stereo upgrade in a car that maxes out at $22,265 before accessories, and it usually just takes you from 'it plays music' to 'this sounds decent.' The Bose stereo in this Kicks, no joke, sounds better than the base stereo in a $180,000 Bentley Bentayga." -- Motor Trend (2018)

Cargo

With 25.3 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, the Nissan Kicks has one of the largest cargo holds in the class. Its total of 53.1 cubic feet with the rear seats folded is also above average. However, the folded seats do not sit evenly on the cargo floor, making it tricky to load long objects.

  • While there isn’t a lot of storage space up front for smaller items like phones or purses, there’s plenty of room in back for sports gear or a small stroller. With the rear seats up, there is 25.3 cubic feet of storage; folding them creates over 53 cubic feet. That capacity puts the Kicks near the top in its class, but without the unrivaled flexibility of Honda’s HR-V." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • The Kicks can carry stuff, too, able to swallow a best-in-class 25.3 cubic feet of cargo with the backseat in place. Fold the seat down and there's 53.1 cubic feet in total -- but the floor isn't flat. The folded seat creates a 6-inch step-up, so long objects need to be lifted over the hump before sliding them in." -- Autoweek (2018)
  • The rear cargo floor is low for easy loading. The flip side of that is the 60/40 split rear seats, which fold but [are] not even with the cargo floor, so there is this step up when tossing really long items back there." -- New York Daily News (2018)
