2020 Nissan Kicks Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.5

The 2020 Nissan Kicks has a nicely built cabin, though it features quite a few hard plastics. The Kicks provides plenty of seating space for four adults and lots of cargo room for a subcompact SUV.

  • "Interior styling is less trendy than the exterior design of the Kicks, but it is well-built, looks grown-up, and has a user-friendly interior." -- Car and Driver
  • "The Kicks is constructed as well as can be expected at this price, but we don't like the acres of plastic used on the door panels. Our test car made a light clunking noise that went away when the rear seatback was put down. Otherwise, enough premium materials are used to keep the interior somewhat interesting." -- Edmunds (2019)

Seating

The Kicks offers spacious, comfortable seating for four adults, though it can seat up to five. Cloth upholstery is standard, and synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are optional.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats.

  • "An adult-sized rear seat means it can haul people and cargo without the cramped feeling one might experience in rivals such as the C-HR." -- Car and Driver
  • "The 5-passenger Kicks has a comfortable and roomy interior. As with other vehicles in Nissan’s lineup, the Kicks is fitted with NASA-inspired 'zero-gravity' seats that provide good support. The Kicks also has a built-in armrest on the right-hand side of the driver’s seat, a rarity in vehicles at this affordable price-point. All models come with a central 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system, with logically arranged controls for the climate system right below." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "The upper half of the Kicks is very roomy, with excellent head and shoulder space front and rear. ... Rear-seat width feels generous as a four-seater, but kneeroom is lacking." -- Edmunds (2019)

Interior Features

The Kicks comes standard with an infotainment system that has logically arranged physical audio and climate controls as well as a 7-inch touch screen with menus that are easy to navigate.

Other standard technology includes Siri Eyes Free, Bluetooth, three USB ports, a six-speaker audio system, push-button start, and remote keyless entry. Loads of safety features are also standard, including a rearview camera, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, high-beam assist, rear cross traffic alert, and rear parking sensors.

Available features include an eight-speaker Bose premium audio system, satellite radio, a surround-view parking camera system, and driver drowsiness monitoring.

  • "Likewise, it has standard driver-assistance features such as automated emergency braking and can be equipped with modern content that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration." -- Car and Driver
  • "A USB port, auxiliary input and 12-volt power jack sit up front. Two more charge-only USB ports are located toward the rear on the center console. Bluetooth pairing is easy. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay function through the infotainment screen. All modern economy cars should have this level of smartphone integration." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "Interior quality is also above average for this segment, and interior controls are both easy to access and use." -- Autotrader (2019)

Cargo

With 25.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind its back seat and 53.1 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down, the Kicks has one of the largest cargo areas in the subcompact SUV class. The rear seats don't fold all the way down, however, so it may be hard to load big items.

  • "Despite its small size, the Kicks impressed us with its results in our cargo tests, matching and beating some larger rivals. We managed to fit 19 of our carry-on suitcases with the rear seats folded." -- Car and Driver
  • "The cargo area is legitimately huge, besting all subcompact crossovers behind the back seat. Only the Honda HR-V is bigger with the rear seats folded away, but just barely." -- Autotrader (2019)
  • "The Kicks' trunk area holds 25.3 cubic feet of cargo, which is above average for the class. The rear seatbacks fold for more space, though the pivot is above the floor of the trunk, so the cargo area isn't flat. The load height is nice and low, and there are bag hooks toward the back of the cargo area." -- Edmunds (2019)
