2018 Nissan Kicks Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2018 Nissan Kicks was new.

Interior: 8.0

Critics are mixed on the Nissan Kicks' interior quality. Some note that there are plenty of hard surfaces regardless of trim level, while others are impressed that the materials are high quality for this price point. Passenger room is decent, even for adults in the second row. Cargo space is impressive for the class. Infotainment features are straightforward and easy to use.

  • Although we drove a top-line SR with Premium Package, even this model isn't awash with high-end interior materials. The dash face was padded (not so in lower-line models), as were the door armrests and fold-down center armrests, but the dash top and door tops were hard plastic. That's not to say the interior looked cheap, but it was clear there was some cost-cutting going on there." -- Consumer Guide
  • The rest of the interior is what you'd expect for a sub-$23,000 car. It's all plastic, unless you get an SR with its nice stitched faux-leather wrap on the dash. The quality of the plastic is fine, as is fit and finish." -- Motor Trend
  • "The interior is quiet and comfortable. It's also surprisingly upscale with quality materials throughout, which is impressive considering this crossover starts at $17,990 for the base S trim." -- Boston Globe

The Nissan Kicks seats five and comes standard with cloth upholstery, a six-way manually adjustable driver's seat, and a four-way manually adjustable passenger seat. Leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a leather-wrapped shift knob are optional. The Kicks has two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors on the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the middle seat.

The Kicks has plenty of room in the front two seats, though some may find the driver’s side a little narrow. Second-row room is adequate for both children and adults.

  • "What's best about the interior, however, is that it's a very usable and roomy space for a car this small. Back-seat passengers won't be stretching out much, but they won't feel as if they should gnaw off their legs at the knees, either. It's a surprisingly efficient cabin for four, but don't push it beyond that." -- Car and Driver
  • "The Kicks is roomy with space for your stuff and your friends. Front seat headroom and legroom are generous and the back seat will seat two adults comfortably–three in a pinch. It's pretty quiet inside too. Premium measures such as an acoustic windshield and thicker side glass are employed plus thicker sound mats for the floor and firewall." -- New York Daily News
  • Up front, the cabin feels big and airy, especially for such a small vehicle. There's tons of leg- and headroom up there, but the space around the driver's knee is cramped. My right knee was always touching the center console. The rear seat is more cramped, especially for the long-legged." -- Motor Trend

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2018 Nissan Kicks include a six-speaker stereo, two USB ports, Bluetooth, push-button start, a 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system, a rearview camera, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Optional features include automatic climate control, proximity key entry, remote start, satellite radio, an eight-speaker Bose premium sound system, a Rockford Fosgate audio system, a Wi-Fi hot spot, rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, a surround-view camera, and NissanConnect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Kicks' touch-screen menus are intuitive to navigate through, and smartphone integration makes it easy to access your phone's apps directly on the touch screen. Physical controls are easily accessible and set in a straightforward layout. Critics praise the sound quality of the optional Bose stereo.

  • "The infotainment layout is a bit more streamlined, with a customizable home screen and menus that are easier to navigate. With smartphone mirroring, the system is much more user-friendly than in other Nissans I've driven. Let's hope the trend continues." -- CNET
  • On the positive side, audio and climate controls are fairly straightforward and easy to reach, and visibility is only restricted to the rear corners due to wide roof pillars, making us appreciate the SR's 360-degree camera when backing. (However, a 'regular' rearview camera is standard.)" -- Consumer Guide
  • "Let's take a moment to talk about this stereo. You're lucky if you can even get a 'premium' stereo upgrade in a car that maxes out at $22,265 before accessories, and it usually just takes you from 'it plays music' to 'this sounds decent.' The Bose stereo in this Kicks, no joke, sounds better than the base stereo in a $180,000 Bentley Bentayga." -- Motor Trend

The 2018 Nissan Kicks has 25.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and 53.1 cubic feet with the second row folded down. Both numbers are excellent for the class. The hatch area's load floor is low, but the back seats don't fold entirely flat.

  • The Kicks can carry stuff, too, able to swallow a best-in-class 25.3 cubic feet of cargo with the backseat in place. Fold the seat down and there's 53.1 cubic feet in total -- but the floor isn't flat. The folded seat creates a 6-inch step-up, so long objects need to be lifted over the hump before sliding them in." -- Autoweek
  • The rear cargo floor is low for easy loading. The flip side of that is the 60/40 split rear seats, which fold but [are] not even with the cargo floor, so there is this step up when tossing really long items back there." -- New York Daily News
  • "There's ... 25.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats for cargo. With the 60/40 split-folding rear seats down, that number grows to 53.1 cubic feet. Add in a low load floor and wide cargo opening, and the Kicks is a versatile vehicle." -- Boston Globe
