2008 Nissan Frontier Review

Note: This review was created when the 2008 Nissan Frontier was new.

The 2008 Frontier has great off-road and hauling capabilities, as well as  ample power and an attractive exterior. Still, it doesn't have the quality materials or interior space of some of its competitors.

Pros & Cons

  • Powerful V6 engine provides "neck-snapping" acceleration
  • Larger, muscular stance similar to Nissan Titan
  • Versatile hauling capacity
  • Excellent off-roading capability
  • Limited space in the King Cab's second row
  • Interior materials feel cheap or "plasticky"
  • Slow steering with a wide turning radius
  • NISMO trim delivers punishing ride when not used for off-roading

2008 Nissan Frontier Overview

The Nissan Frontier is a compact pickup truck with more power for the highway, more utility for hauling and more oomph for off-roading. "This is no frumpy grocery getter, though," writes U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman. "Nissan has seen to it that the Frontier carries forward the rough and rowdy image" of its platform-mate, the full-size Nissan Titan. Still, critics complain of an unrefined suspension and uncomfortable back seats in the King Cab trim.  Those critics might be silenced by the fact that the Frontier gets some of the best gas mileage in the class.

The 2008 Nissan Frontier's two-door King Cab is available in four trims -- the base XE, SE, NISMO (short for Nissan Motor Sports) and LE. The four-door Crew Cab is available in three trims -- the SE, NISMO and LE.

  • "This new truck offers more of everything truck users and truck lovers want: lots more power, more room; great off-road potential, and more utility, all wrapped up in a more luxurious package." -- TruckXcessory.com
  • "A civilized ride, reasonable size, safety equipment, and a strong V-6 make the Frontier a medium-size pickup with big-time appeal." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Give the folks at Nissan a cigar, a pat on the back, thumbs up, whatever you use to signal deep approval and delightful surprise." -- USA Today
  • "The new version of the popular pickup is both roomier and more capable, with the powerful V-6 adding to the appeal. The hard-riding NISMO should be considered only for those who like to drive off the asphalt." -- Arizona Republic
  • "And even with all the gear, the Frontier's as-tested price of $31,630 was $190 cheaper than the bare-bones Dakota." -- Car and Driver
