2014 Nissan Armada Review

The 2014 Nissan Armada has a capable V8 engine, but it rides roughly over broken pavement and suffers from clumsy handling. The Armada ends up near the bottom of its class because it lacked critical praise. In comparison, rivals were well-received when they debuted.

Pros & Cons

  • Good off-road capability
  • Strong V8 engine
  • Low fuel economy
  • Rough ride quality
  • So-so interior quality

2014 Nissan Armada Overview

Is the 2014 Nissan Armada a Good Used SUV?

The Nissan Armada isn’t a good SUV for most shoppers, as it offers few advantages over rivals. Some competitors have more passenger space, more user-friendly features, or a nicer interior.

Used 2014 Nissan Armada Performance and Interior

The only engine available in the 2014 Nissan Armada is a 317-horsepower V8. It is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission, and both rear-wheel and four-wheel drive are available. There’s enough power to get you moving from a stop, and once this big SUV is up to speed, highway merging and passing exercises are easy. However, the Armada can sometimes feel sluggish when trying to accelerate quickly if you have a lot of passengers or cargo. When properly equipped, the Armada has a towing capacity of 9,000 pounds. Not surprisingly, fuel economy estimates are low – 13 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway.

Like many large SUVs, the Armada does not have great driving dynamics. This big Nissan rides comfortably enough over smooth roads, but its body-on-frame construction gives it a jarring quality over uneven surfaces like potholes. The Armada also exhibits considerable body lean when cornering and can be hard to maneuver in tight spaces. Its rugged body type, when matched with four-wheel drive, makes the Armada a formidable off-road companion.

The 3-row Nissan Armada seats up to eight, though some models may have second-row captain’s chairs that reduce occupancy to seven. Cloth upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and a reclining second row are standard. Other upgrades you may find include leather or premium leather upholstery, heated first- and second-row seats, and a power-folding third row. There’s plenty of passenger room in the front and middle rows, though third-row legroom is tight. The Armada has two complete LATCH car-seat connections and a tether anchor for the third-row middle seat.

Standard features in the base 2014 Nissan Armada SV include dual-zone automatic climate control, an eight-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and rear parking sensors. Available features include a Bose premium sound system, navigation, a DVD entertainment system, two USB ports, a rearview camera, proximity key entry, a power liftgate, an auto-leveling rear suspension, and a moonroof. Most of the Armada’s physical controls are easy to reach and laid out intuitively.

Should I Consider Another Used Armada?

The 2014 Armada is part of the SUV’s first generation, which spans the 2004 through 2015 model years. There were few major changes in the few years prior to 2014, so you may be able to save money by considering an older model.

Which Used Nissan Armada Is Right for Me?

The Nissan Armada is available in three trims: SV, SL, and Platinum. All come with the same V8 engine and can be found with rear- or all-wheel drive. For most shoppers, the midrange Nissan Armada SL will be the best value. It includes leather seats, a rearview camera, heated front seats, and a Bose sound system.

You may also want to consider a certified pre-owned Armada. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Nissan extends the original new-car warranty to seven years or 100,000 miles. To become certified pre-owned, each Nissan vehicle must pass a 167-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Nissan warranty page carefully.

2014 Nissan Armada and Other SUVs to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Nissan Armada or 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe?

The 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe is a class-leading large SUV. It’s good all-around, boasting solid safety and reliability marks and spacious, comfortable seating for up to nine. With all those positives, we named the Tahoe our 2014 Best Large SUV for the Money and 2014 Best Large SUV for Families. Average prices for the Tahoe are a couple thousand dollars higher than the Armada, but it’s worth it to get a much better vehicle.

If you’re in the market for something a little more upscale, check out the Tahoe’s corporate cousin, the 2014 GMC Yukon. Though the Yukon might cost you more than the Tahoe, it has a handsome interior with upscale materials. The Yukon Denali trim also comes with a more powerful V8 engine.

Which Is Better: 2014 Nissan Armada or 2014 Toyota Sequoia?

The 2014 Toyota Sequoia is a better overall SUV, despite having much higher average purchase and ownership costs. Like the Armada, the Sequoia boasts a potent V8 engine, and a smooth-shifting transmission makes the most of your power. Ride quality is comfortable, and handling is decent for a 3-row SUV. Interior accommodations are comparable between these rivals – both offer good amounts of passenger space, and though the Sequoia’s cabin design is a bit dated, its quality is top-notch. The Sequoia also has a better reliability score than the Armada.

Which Is Better: 2014 Nissan Armada or 2014 Nissan Pathfinder?

The 2014 Nissan Pathfinder is another 3-row SUV from the brand, though this midsize SUV offers less cargo space. However, you won’t sacrifice much in the way of passenger space; the seven-seat Pathfinder can comfortably fit adults in its third row. The main downside to the Pathfinder is an abysmal reliability rating – its score of two out of five is the worst possible. On the flip side, its safety scores are higher than those of many large SUVs. With lower listing prices and ownership costs, the Pathfinder is the better choice of these two Nissans.
