2009 Nissan Armada Review

The 2009 Nissan Armada has all the characteristics of a large SUV, like a powerful V8 engine, a strong towing capability and a cavernous interior with three rows of seats. However, the Armada falls short in a class where many key rivals offer more compelling packages.

Pros & Cons

  • Powerful engine
  • Good tow rating
  • Outdated design inside and out
  • Less cargo space than competitors
  • Lowest fuel economy rating of its class

2009 Nissan Armada Overview

When it was new, reviewers said the 2009 Armada wasn’t a bad SUV, but that it didn’t have enough redeeming traits to distinguish it. Low fuel economy estimates help to push the Armada toward the bottom of the class.

The 2009 Nissan Armada is powered by a 5.6-liter V8 engine that puts out 317 horsepower. Reviewers said that the engine is one of the Armada’s bright spots, moving the large SUV with ease. On the other hand, the Armada has a great penchant for fuel, even in this class. With either rear- or four-wheel drive, the Armada achieves an EPA-estimated 12/18 mpg city/highway. Despite its subpar fuel economy estimates, the Armada is a fairly capable vehicle, at least when it comes to its 9,100-pound tow rating. Cargo capacity is 97.1 cubic feet, which is less than what the most cavernous competitors provide.

The Armada can seat up to eight, and most critics said the first two rows were fairly comfortable, though not one was clamoring to ride in the third row, which many thought was cramped. The Armada saw few changes since it debuted in 2004, and as a result, many reviewers said that the interior material quality fell short compared with that of rivals. Standard equipment includes power-folding outside mirrors, rear park assist and dual-zone climate control. Features available in option packages or higher trim levels include a power sunroof, navigation, leather upholstery, Bluetooth, a rear-seat entertainment system and a Bose stereo. Since it’s been largely unchanged since 2004, you may be able to save some money by shopping for an older model.

Other Cars to Consider

With good fuel economy, the 2009 GMC Yukon is worth considering. If the base Yukon’s 20 cubic feet of additional cargo space isn’t enough, a long-wheelbase Yukon XL has even more room. The Yukon’s main drawback is that its third row must be removed to expand cargo space.

Another contender is the 2009 Chevrolet Suburban, which is closely related to the Yukon XL. Aside from additional cargo space and tow ratings that are a bit heftier, the Suburban also has a more refined interior than the Armada and can seat up to nine.
