2016 Nissan 370Z Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2016 Nissan 370Z was new.

Scorecard

Performance: 8.6

The 2016 Nissan 370Z has athletic handling, a smooth ride and a slick-shifting manual transmission. Acceleration is strong, though some critics note that the 370Z's V8-powered competitors feel faster.

  • "Really helping the Z stand out is its balance between comfort and handling. You'd expect the excellent handling you get with the Z, but the comfortable ride you get when cruising to the beach is unexpected, and welcome." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The Z will impress you both off the line and on the open road." -- AutoTrader (2014)
  • "For those buyers looking for a quick weekend tourer capable of carving up and down a good mountain pass, the 370Z Roadster scratches most of the right itches." -- Road and Track (2014)

Acceleration and Power

The 2016 Nissan 370Z comes standard with a 3.7-liter V6 engine that produces 332 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. NISMO models have a tuned version of the base engine that makes 350 horsepower and 276 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a seven-speed automatic is available. Automatic models come with Nissan’s Downshift Rev Matching system, while manual Sport and Sport Tech models have Nissan's SynchroRev Match system. During gear changes, these systems adjust the engine speed to match the new gear, which helps you achieve smoother downshifts. The 2016 Nissan 370Z Coupe gets up to an EPA-estimated 19/26 mpg city/highway with an automatic transmission, which is a bit low for a V6-powered sports car.

Critics agree the Nissan 370Z's V6 engine delivers strong acceleration, though some point out that it doesn't feel as strong as the V8 engines in rival sports cars. Auto writers report that the manual transmission's available SynchroRev Match feature makes downshifting fun.

  • "The 370Z manual transmission's SynchroRev Match matches revs on downshifts for you, making it easy to shift this sports car like a pro. The strong and smooth V6 offers excellent mid- and high-rev power, but it lacks the low-end grunt you get from a V8." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The Z accelerates to 60 MPH in about five and a half seconds, and that's great. With your foot all the way down, you really feel it." -- Jalopnik (2015 Roadster)
  • "The 3.7-liter V6 engine remains one of the gems of the auto industry: quick to rev, gutsy torque curve, and a bit more power than the standard car. …" -- Autoblog (2015 NISMO)
  • "In particular, the SynchroRev Match mode for the manual transmission is an enthusiast's delight, as it'll make you feel like a professional racer with every perfectly rev-matched downshift." -- Edmunds (2015)

Handling and Braking

The 2016 Nissan 370Z has athletic handling on winding roads, auto writers report, with abundant grip, strong brakes and sharp steering. They add that the ride isn't too firm, which can be a problem in some other sports cars.

  • "To drive the 2016 Nissan 370Z Coupe or Roadster around town, you'd be hard pressed to believe it's as capable as it is on a twisting road. Although road distortions and freeway expansion joints will quickly make their presence known, the ride isn't overly harsh, especially for a 2-seat sports car. Get the Z out on one of those mountain passes, though, and you'll discover a car with flat cornering, excellent steering and powerful brakes." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "For 2015, Nissan has revised the suspension tuning on all 370Z models, and it has added a small degree of suppleness to the ride quality without detracting much from the sharp handling and near-endless grip for which the current Z car has always been known." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "The brakes worked, and didn't fail on me after trying a few panic stops, so there's that. Good pedal feel, too." -- Jalopnik (2015)
