2009 Nissan 350Z Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2009 Nissan 350Z was new.

Interior: 7.5

Auto writers are disappointed with the 2009 350Z's subpar interior materials, ergonomic quirks, and lack of suitable cargo room. However, for a small two-seater, many find it to be comfortable.

  • "All of the controls a driver might need are close at hand, but some of the materials used in the cockpit seem low-grade for this price range." -- Edmunds
  • "...Nissan scrimped on materials to cut costs -- many pieces feel cheap. The door panels are bleak expanses of plastic; the lid of the dashboard storage bin is flimsy junk." -- The New York Times

Critics, on balance, find the 350Z's two seat cabin comfortable -- even if difficult to enter and exit.

  • "These are among the more spacious two-seaters, though high doorsills and a low seating position give a closed-in feel. The seats have decent lateral bolstering, but some testers find the padding a bit thin for best comfort on long drives." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The stylish cockpit welcomes two average-size adults, though, as with most sports cars of this size, larger riders may crave more room; the less-limber might find access a challenge, particularly with the top up." -- Forbes
  • "The 350Z Roadster's interior is roomy and well arranged, and even our tallest driver was able to find a position in which the steering wheel, pedals, shift lever and controls were all within comfortable reach." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "There is plenty of room for occupants, and supportive seats invite spirited driving." -- MSN
  • "One thing to remember, though, is that this is a two-seater - a real one, so it has no backseat even to rest your briefcase on." -- Cars.com

Interior Features

Though the 350Z comes equipped with loads of interior convenience features, auto writers note several ergonomic quirks and Cars.com takes issue with its sound system.

  • "The clearly marked gauge cluster tilts with the steering column. Most controls are easy to reach, but the audio buttons are a bit undersized to operate easily while driving." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Cupholders invite spills because they're placed far back on the console, and the pop-out dashboard cupholder is flimsy. Climate controls are large and clearly marked, but sound system controls are small. Don't search for a glove box because it doesn't exist." -- MSN
  • "I could tell the interior's age only when I noticed it had no audio input for my MP3 player.  ... The stereo overall offered a muddy listening experience. Sound systems are hard to mess up in such small cars, but I found the music and its excessive amounts of treble hard to stomach. Punk rock especially sounded lifeless and tinny." -- Cars.com

The 350Z provides a meager 4.1 cubic-feet of cargo room. However, it does feature five cup holders, dash-mounted storage, padded center console storage, a lockable rear luggage box, passenger storage net and a rear parcel box. Altogether, the Z's storage features received mixed reviews.

  • "This convertible has a small, shallow trunk, though space does not shrink with the top down. Three covered bins in the rear wall of the cockpit behind the seat mean interior storage is good, but this space is not easily accessible." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Storage space is limited, as you might suspect, but, according to a pictogram affixed to the inside of the deck lid, the trunk is big enough for a set of golf clubs." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The hatchback's opening is extremely high, and a hefty crosswise structural brace in the long, shallow cargo area can seriously hinder loading and unloading. The convertible has a smaller trunk with even less depth. No wonder the car has a cargo compartment label that has a diagram and reads 'How to store two golf bags.' However, there are small storage bins behind the seats." -- MSN
